Germany Wim Wenders Blu-rays (Der Himmel über Berlin; In weiter Ferne, so nah!; Paris, Texas)

On Amazon.de "Der Himmel über Berlin" (Wings of Desire), "In weiter Fernse, so nah!" (Faraway, so Close!) and "Paris, Texas" are listed as StudioCanal Blu-ray releases and up for pre-order.

All three of them are listed with a July 18th release date.

I hope we see "Don't Come Knocking" and the DC of "Bis ans Ende der Welt" (Until the End of the World) on BD soon.

I recieved my German Wenders BDs today.

Looked into "Der Himmel über Berlin" - seems to be the same transfer as the Criterion.
Even the opening credits and the title are in English.

I just bought this from amazon.de, so that's good info to know!
I am only sticking to Region B due to region locking.

Does Faraway, so Close! have the Wim Wenders commentary track (that is on the US DVD)?

These caps for this new disc (Paris, Texas) look really good. Occasionally the sky is a bit blown out, but otherwise, wow. I zoomed in a ton and the textures on clothes, for example, are so much better.
Any word on this new scan coming to Blu-ray outside of Germany? Did criterion lose it to Studio Canal here in the states?

New StudioCanal has the original 1.66:1 AR. The old Criterion transfer is zoomed in to 1.78:1

I just went ahead and got this version on import to the UK, only disadvantage really is no English subs if you want them, nice package with a full slipcase covering a slip br case and a short book(in german but mostly pictures).

Definitely a very significant improvement over my Axiom BR(which is the same transfer as Criterion isn't it?) which previously I didn't view as bad at all, maybe because I assumed the film was fundamentally a bit lo fi and not that sharp? its still grainy but very significantly sharper, more colourful and with more detail in the shadows.

The one area I can potentially see people having issues I spose is that the look of the daytime skys has shifted away from the ultra blues of the previous transfers towards more realistic. Personally I preffer that but I'd guess some maybe wouldn't? scenes like the car driving though the thunderstorm to the yellow motel early on look absolutely fantastic on this version.

I'm hoping we see Wings of Desire/Heaven Over Berlin get a similar release soon given that a 4K scan of that was doing the rounds at cinemas wasn't it?

This was released in Germany early last year already.

Thanks, whats the opinion of that version relative to the previous?

Although looking at it German only subs probably means waiting for an English release there.

I couldn't say as I saw the movie for the first time with this release.
Maybe someone else can chime in.

You can check comparison between old and new disc right there.

It's a new master, compression could be better but overall it looks great.
I can confirm that there are no English subtitles on a new German disc.

Just watched the German Studio Canal (4K remastered) release and have to say in general it looks absolutely marvelous. Saw the same 4K restoration in the cinema a couple of months ago and knew straight away I had to buy the Blu-ray when it came out.
The Blu-ray has 2 audio options, which are in DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and both are hybrid German, French and English. Think one is restored and the other not (or less), but I didn't notice too much differences while switching on the fly.
As has been said, the German Blu-ray doesn't have subtitles in English, which is a bit of a shame, but it does force one just to soak in the quality of the wonderful cinematography.
This is where the biggest negative comes into place, namely compression.
Now I don't normally spot iffy compression, but in this case I did notice a spot where compression gets really ugly and bitrates were around 16-20 Mbps (the movies seems to average between 18-25 Mbps). It's the scene after Peter Falk is introduced in the airplane and you see some aerial shots of clouds and then a radiotower or whaterever it is. Compression here is bad and I wouldn't be surprised if it happens in other spots, that I didn't notice myself.
Most extra's are in German, but the masterclass (30 min) is in English and is worth the price of admission alone.

Here is a picture I tried to make of the shot: https://imgur.com/a/FWYIfPi

Just got the new German release of Paris, Texas. It's a beautiful set but does anyone have or know where I can find an English translation of the booklet? It's one of my favourite films so it'd be a shame not to have that to read.

That's a massive difference, hope this new restoration gets an English friendly release soon on a good US/UK label.
