So they start the trend. Other companies follow their example. Now, they quit doing it. That must make the other companies look like fools.

Microtransactions probably generate more revenue, but only when gamer is online. Hence, elimination of paid online acceess.

Wonder what this means for older games that require it.

The only game I play online is Madden. So how does this affect me? What is microtransaction?

Go onto the PS Store, look up the Madden page, and check out the ADD-ON section. $0.50 for a special jersey, $1.99 to unlock content that is already in the game, $0.99 for special cleats for your quarterback that make him run faster, $1.49 for a glove that gives your wide receiver a 10% increased catch success rate...

microtransactions examplified

P.S. Those examples are completely made up. Those are not reflective of actual content available for Madden on the PS Store.

If EA is bad, then Sony is pure evil. Just look up LittleBig Planet.

Hahaha no.

Most of LBP dlc is cosmetic. There are a couple level add-ons and miscellaneous stuff, but they aren't released Day 1, aren't overpriced and don't provide an advantage to those who bought it.

Go look at Tiger Woods 13/14 DLC to see insanity. It's straight up withheld content from the final release. And if I recall, TW13 released with $200+ of DLC on day 1. (I might be wrong on the exact amount, but it was pretty ridiculous).

I'm not a huge EA hater, but comparing LBP to EA's approach is just laughable. LBP is mostly cosmetic like Team Fortress hats. It's not a lot of withheld content, upgrades, buffs, etc.

EA is geting rid of it because they are going to implement a different strategy. Maybe require always online for one of their games.

The Online Pass is going away because EA wants to sell all the features it should include in the game separately. So those Online Passes was a barrier to much higher revenues from those that refuse to pay for online access. According to this video, games that come out yearly may not anymore, instead you buy in an in game yearly update.

You have to pay to play online if you buy the game used, you need an Online Pass. EA hopes they make more from in game transactions than the passes. I usually buy one of the many NCAA Dynasty packages they offer since that is what I got the game to play, dynasty mode. I don't think I can even access the in game store without a pass so I couldn't even use those extras offline.

Yep, I knew this was coming too. This is just the next step in this garbage practice. Games will be tied to your account now. You can play used games on another console only if you are using the account that game was registered too. So, unless every Xbox One owner decides to start sharing their account with everyone else, there won't be much of a used market for the next Xbox.
