Home video release dates are decided well in advance of theatrical release.

The 3D was post converted, the opening of the movie benefits the most.
The rest of the movie was decent in 3D as well. I would say a solid job.

I enjoyed it in IMAX but I enjoy 90% of the 3D I see in theaters.

These idiot filmmakers changed the famous line "to boldly go where no man has gone before" with "to boldly go where no one has gone before."

EPIC FAIL!

And a new record was set with the amount of lens flares.

That line was used in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.

Honestly, J.J. Abrams' directing style made it quite annoying in close-up shots (mostly in the first 30 mins). Aside from maybe those 7 or 8 short noticeable scenes, it was actually pretty damn fantastic throughout.

What I am referring to about t being annoying is that the very tip of someones out of focus nose is this tiny little thing on the edge of screen that demands attention instead of your eyes... or a small part of a shoulder... or 1/3 of someones arm vertically on the edge of screen from top to bottom. It doesn't happen for long when it does happen. But, man is it annoying when it does!

I assume you are talking about Nicholas Meyer who directed Star Trek VI? as Kirks final lines in that film are 'where no *one* has gone before'

That's the only true statement in this post.

I read the New York Post and New York Times reviews last night. I hope to disagree but have a bad feeling I won't. Looks like it's going to be another hot debate.

Unfortunately, the "Lens Flair" part is also not true.

He cut way, way back on lens flairs for INTO DARKNESS. There are a few notable ones, but we're talking maybe a handful or so stretched out across the whole movie.

I literally left the theater going "Huh. Hardly any lens flairs."

Ask Simon Pegg about those who criticize lens flare:

Quote:
Probably some film student who wanted to demonstrate his or her knowledge of film terminology, thus elevating themselves to an assumed level of critical superiority, which gave them the kind of smug, knowing smile that indicates a festering sour grape, fizzing in the pit of their own ambition. It’s become a sort of communal schtick to have a crack at JJ with, mostly by people who didn’t know what the f*** lens flare was, until someone started smearing the term all over their blog. It demonstrates JJ’s supreme talent as a film maker that the main means of knocking him is to magnify a throw away artistic choice, into some sort of hilarious failing. Lens flare is essentially an anomaly caused by light hitting the lens and creating refracted shapes. Because it draws attention to the fact that we are looking at a filmed event, it actually creates a subliminal sense of documentary realism and makes the moment more vital and immediate. In the same way Spielberg spattered his shots with bloody seawater in Saving Private Ryan, JJ suggests that the moment we are in is so real and alive, there just isn’t time to frame out all the light and activity. The irony is by acknowledging the film’s artifice, you are enhancing the reality of the moment. It’s clever and I love it. On set we call it ‘best in show’ and our amazing director of photography, Dan Mindel has a special technique to achieve it. To the detractors, I offer a polite f*** you and suggest you find a new schtick to beat us with, if being a huge, boring neggyballs is necessary for your personal happiness.

Film was not a letdown at all. I could see where it was going to go most of the time though. Day 1 buy for me.

Saw it at one of the 9PM screenings last night. I loved the first one and thought this one was way better. The showing was in 3d, but only because that was all that was available during that time. However, the 3D was actually very good. Also, the flare didn't really bother me, save for one shot that drove me totally bonkers.

This will be a day 1 purchase for me, and I'll probably see it again in theaters. I couldn't recommend the film more. A great time at the movies.
