Sweden Wallander 2013 (Krister Henriksson)

Yellow Bird are currently completing a six-film series of Wallander films with current star Krister Henriksson this year. The first of these is an adaptation of the final Wallander novel Den orolige mannen (The Troubled Man), which came out on video this week, after a cinema release earlier this year. All six films will be released on Blu-ray, but it does not appear that they will be English-friendly.

http://www.discshop.se/filmer/wallander_2013/C1064

The other films in the series are Försvunnen, Sveket, Saknaden, Mordbrännaren and Sorgfågeln, all of which will be released on Blu-ray between June and the end of October.

As they will bring these to Germany, UK and other countries I don't think they will spoil those markets by making the Swedish discs with english subtitles.

I have no question that these will all appear in an English-friendly territory (Arrow has the first one for the UK already), the question is if they will appear on Blu-ray.

Arrow are pretty good at releasing new films on BD e.g.The Hunt and A Hijacking. Where they are crap is releasing TV shows on BD except The Killing and Borgen.

So we may get the first on BD if they release separately, not sure at present on the others.

They have pulled the BD of Arne Dahl and that is now DVD only in June. However the Scandinavian BD have English subtitles as were released before UK rights were sold.

Krister Henriksson's Wallander is truly an outstanding Swedish drama. Such a tremendously underrated actor. All of the films are now out on Blu-ray in Sweden, but unfortunately none are English-friendly. Only Swedish, Danish and Norwegian subtitles. For some reason Finnish subtitles have not been added. I wonder what is the reason behind this because I seriously doubt Finland would ever put this series out on Blu-ray. The first two seasons are released as double feature sets, and the final season as regular standalone releases. Pricing is affordable, currently only 2.95 euros each(CDON). However, seeing that the series consists of 32 films, this release strategy seems nothing more but a cash-grab. Hopefully somewhere down the road Arrow will release a Complete Series set, especially now that they have obtained the rights and have already put out the first two seasons on DVD. For the time being, NetFlix offers the series in HD.

If they were like those four-disc Beck sets I'd be more willing to purchase them all.

Edit. Not to mention the original Wallander films starring Rolf Lassgård. There are not even English-friendly DVD's of the first films. Does Arrow own the rights to these as well? I know they released a box set (Original Films 1-6; false marketing, it is actually four films and not the first films).
Arrow seem to have lost interest in Scandinavian TV on BD I guess unless we see a Bridge 3 or similar.

I asked them about Crimes of Passion as like with Wallander (2013) they originally listed a BD on Amazon but this was pulled and they only released on DVD. Never got a reply.

I am surprised Arrow never released the other early Wallander even if only on DVD as there are a few more episodes BBC4 screened I recorded to DVD but they never got a retail DVD release from Arrow or someone else.

Need to improve my Danish and Swedish as move back there in January. I am okay provided there are Danish subtitles. As you say though the problem is the outrageous prices of Swedish TV on BD as they want SEK200 per episode and even final sale prices aren't brillant, and they never seem to bundle up into cheap series / season sets.

Mankell's Wallander blu-ray box set (starring Krister Henriksson as Wallander) does exist out there, I got it from Cdon two months ago. The Blu-ray set had been continuously 'out of stock' on Cdon since Spring 2023, and when I was notified it was back, even then it showed "only a few copies left". As I write this again it has been 'out of stock' again for a while. I've been trying to figure out when this box set was released cause it doesn't say it on the box. I think (but could be wrong) that it was a fairly recent release on blu-ray *as this bundle* because I haven't seen this set on blu-ray before this year and because its been recently available and then again not available on the Cdon site. Can't figure out why its not available more widely internationally, these were such great films!
I've seen some of the movies being sold earlier as single discs on the Scandinavian second-hand online stores, but never before this bundle of all the movies. The bundle has been around as dvd set for a while, so this is obviously the same, just as a blu-ray version. The box set has 22 black blu-ray discs stuffed in a thick (45mm thick) plastic box with Krister Henriksson's face on the front cover, there are no booklets or extras. The title reads "Mankell's Wallander Collector's Box" "Includes 32 Movies", with logos of Yellow Bird, channel 4, and SF studios. Subtitles are only in Scandinavian languages (Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, and on the last season also Finnish).
The quality of all the Wallander movies is great, in most of them its superb quality, very high definition video with just a little bit of grain and good audio. For example the films "Innan frosten (Before the Frost)" and "Bröderna (Brothers)" were truly outstanding in quality. Some others, such as "Mörkret (Darkness)" were a bit softer, I don't know why the video quality was not as high on a few of the films than on most others (don't get me wrong, theyre still good just not as mind-blowingly great video quality as some other of the films; also, this applies to a few of the first season films, overall the quality is outstanding). The price was around 30-40 euros at the time (September 2023). Here in Scandinavia they show this series on television all the time but in my opinion this blu-ray set is much better quality than any tv broadcasts I've seen. Recommended.

Yeah, the Nordic set is impossible to find anywhere. Besides, it would be missing English subs anyway.
I wonder why Arrow won't upgrade their dated DVD sets to a single Blu-Ray box like this one. I, for one, am not gonna buy DVDs anymore.
Let us hope it's gonna get a wider release, with English subs.

You can still find the Blu-ray box set online for around 60–70 euros. I speak and understand some Swedish, but I'm really not sure if I would be able to enjoy the set with just Swedish subtitles. It is utterly mind-boggling that they released this set with an English-language cover and then did not put in English subtitles. I highly doubt Arrow would have any interest in releasing this on Blu-ray.

Why not? They were interested enough to release it on DVD

Yes, but that was years ago, and they just don't seem that interested in releasing TV on Blu-ray anymore. I really do hope I'm wrong, but I just don't see this happening anytime soon.

Perhaps you're right, I hadn't noticed the lack of recent TV releases from Arrow.
What a pity. They've given us some marvelous TV series in the past, I'm thinking Nordic Noir in particular, but not only that. Among my favorites ever, really.
I was really counting on Arrow for the original Wallander and for the French drama 'Engrenages'.

As I mentioned earlier in the Studio S thread, now that we have the original 90s Beck films on English-friendly Blu-rays in Sweden, perhaps they could release the original 90s Wallander films with Rolf Lassgård as well. I sent them an email regarding this today, so hopefully there will be at least some answers as to who owns the rights, if nothing else.

I received the following response:

Quote:
The original Wallander films are not available for distribution. The company that holds the rights want to keep the rights for themself, so we can not work with those titles.
This is very sad news indeed. I wonder if the other company is Sandrew Metronome?

Oh. That's too bad. I wonder what exactly they are keeping those for.
You didn't happen to ask if they have plans to release their DVD Wallander sets in full HD?

I'm not sure if Sandrew Metronome holds the rights, but I will try to find out and approach them as well. That is, if I can find the correct person to get in touch with.
