United Kingdom Andromeda Blu-ray information...

Just asked about the release of the Andromeda blu-ray release.

Here is the reply I got:

Thanks for the email.

Unfortunately, as is the case with a lot of these shows, we are unable to access the original film masters so we are using the existing masters. We will, however, be putting the footage through a clean up and digital enhancement process so it will be more than what is classed as a simple 'upscale'.

We will also be creating 5.1 surround sound for the Blu-ray release (although the original audio will also be available as an option).

I do hope that this helps.

Thanks for the info.

Although the later seasons were laughable IMO, the first two in particular were pretty strong. I already have them on DVD so will probably wait and see how well these BDs are reviewed before I opt to 'upgrade'.

So another Farscape style upscale but at least with that you got all 4 Seasons for £60/70, not £50 per season

Jeez, I assumed that these would be priced along similar lines to the Farscape BDs. £44's the cheapest I'm seeing Andromeda Season 1 at the moment. Think I'll be waiting for that to come down before I check them out. On the bright side, it'll have been reviewed by then so at least I'll know whether it's worth picking up over the DVDs.

I agree, the price is far too high for these, especially if these are more or less going to be upscales. Will be waiting for under £20 a season.

I asked Revelation Films about the other seasons getting a release , below is there response.

Quote:
Hi there,
Yes we do still plan to release them but as Blu-ray is still so expensive to produce, and sales haven't been amazing, we are having to leave more time between the releases. We hope to have the next one out early next year

You'd have expected that they might have seen the 'less than stellar' sales coming. It was never the most popular show. That combined with the high price point and no remaster it's hardly surprising that people weren't tripping over each other to get a set!

That being said, it's good that they're still intent on releasing the other seasons, I hate partial releases.

It does surprise me how distributors still have unrealistic views on pricing their product and what sales it will generate.

The only TV show which regularly sells at £50 a season is Star Trek but with TNG that has had full ground up HD restoration. For something like Andromeda especially as its upscales a more reasonable price is £20 to £25 a season. However given its a show which has ended as others have said a better policy would be a complete boxset at the £50 to £60 price point so as said above the price Farscape had to drop to before sales picked up. Given that was also Revelation surely they must know this from their sales data.

If they had managed to license some of the commentary tracks from the U.S Slipstream Collection then I'm pretty sure this would have sold much better than it has done, especially at a more realistic price point (say £25 per season).

Except the two of those are probably impossible to do simultaneously. I hear Criterion charge unreasonably high amounts for extra licensing, even if the release is region locked, which is why you rarely see Criterion extras on non-Criterion releases...

Am I seeing things, or this Blu-ray from the TV show Andromeda (2000-2005) looks worse on this upscaled Blu-ray than it does on DVD?

What kind of crap this is? Because it looks awfully bad on Blu-ray.
