Default Where are the 299$/E blu-ray players?

We must realize that the only way to win this format war as soon as we can is a cheap 299$/E player......i don't understand why Sony don't launch a cheap blu-ray player with simillar features as the Toshiba HD-A2.........70% of the HDTV's(in the whole world) that have been sold since now are 720p/1080i screens.....1080p is still expensive..............a 720p/1080i player without 5.1 analog inputs, memory card readers or anything else that could make it's production cheaper.......a lot of people want it........don't you agree?

It's just not what Blu-ray is about...they would be stooping to HD-DVDs level.

Not another $299 blu-ray player thread...

When will people realize hardware does not sell software, software sells hardware. Without the movie catalog then the hardware won't sell, regardless of price. Once you buy the player you still have to invest in movies. This is where the money is made and thus where the format war will be won...with the software. With Blu-ray winning by a 2:1 margin and HD-DVD players below $200.00 I don't think, nor does the BDA, that the price point needs to be lowered to compete.

In this point you 're right.......at least if the could lower the price of the first gen players(Samsung BD-P1000, Panasonic DMP-BD10, Sony BDP-S1E) to 299$/E it would be perfect......and then may some people would buy one of these instead of the Toshiba's........

What I think is going on here, as far as all the "we need cheaper prices on Blu-ray players" is that all we are really wanting is the price to come down so it will make it more affordable to us. Hey we all want to save a buck or two right? Thus if those come down and the format wins out then the prices on the movie side will come down and we all win. Just my psychological analysis...

Plus anything new that comes out now would have to be 1.1 anyway. I'm sure we will see some price drops on existing models. BDP-S1?

Which brings up a good point...this final profile 1.1, or whatever they are calling it now, was more of a hinderance than the price reductions of blu-ray players.

I agree with you, I’ve even seen a Phillips bluray player yesterday on a site for $299. The issue here is not so much the price of the player but content and the pricing of these contents.

I have two young boys, and since the younger one came into this world about 23 months ago it has been very difficult for me and my wife to go out and enjoy a movie or anything like that. I decided to spend around $9800 to turn one of our rooms into a home theater, I must admit it still have ways to go before I can say I’m satisfied with it.

I went out and purchase the play station 3 since I didn't want to be stuck at the beginning of this war not knowing which way it's going to go. Fast-forward 11months later and I've accumulate all of the software and all of the blockbuster titles we miss out on in the theaters. My little ones still haven’t seen Cars or ratatouille , My wife haven’t seen spiderman3, pirates of the Caribbean 3, Die hard 4 or the Harry potter films.

My only question for the proponents of the $98 players and the $199 players, looking at my situation, all that I’ve invest in this setup and plan to invest in the future . Can you provide me with the same content as I list above or should I just use this player to watch DVDs?

I understand Sony. I just don't understand why and where are the Philips and cheaper Samsungs at? And other BDA companies that can produce a sub $300 player like Funai? These are the companies that will break hddvd.

Toshiba is about to put a nail in their own coffin.

It is no longer a viable business to be in if you have already drove the cost of the product lower than the cost to actually produce it.

What other CE manufacturer in the right mind would invest any money into a failing business.

Thanks Toshi!
Looks and sounds like a perfect business model.

Sounds great, but is there more than one UPC on the box? I only remember seeing one on my PS3 and it doesn't say anything about a copy being acceptable. This would be great for my bedroom.....
