Vienna Philharmonic Summer Night Concert Schönbrunn 2013
Date: Thursday, May 30, 2013 Time: 9:00 PM Place: Schönbrunn Palace, Palace Gardens (in front of the Neptune Fountain) 1130 Vienna Conductor: Lorin Maazel Soloist: Michael Schade, Tenor Despite uninviting weather conditions, an estimated 15,000 people gathered to hear the Vienna Philharmonic Summer Night Concert Schönbrunn 2013 under the baton of Lorin Maazel. The hardy audience, which was forced to brave cold, wet and rainy conditions, heard a program made up of representative compositions by two giants of the world of opera who both celebrate their bicentennials this year, Giuseppe Verdi and Richard Wagner. The Vienna Philharmonic, which is completely at home in the world of opera through its work as the orchestra of the Vienna State Opera, and Lorin Maazel, himself a former director of said house, performed not only instrumental highlights of the two composers, but accompanied Tenor Michael Schade in two arias. The free concert in the park of Schönbrunn Palace with the Vienna Philharmonic was performed this year for the tenth time and was broadcast on television and radio around the world. Lorin Maazel For over five decades, Lorin Maazel has been one of the world’s most esteemed and sought-after conductors. A second-generation American born in Paris, Lorin Maazel began violin lessons at the age of five, and conducting lessons at seven. He studied with Vladimir Bakaleinikoff and appeared publicly for the first time aged eight. Between the ages of nine and 15, he conducted most of the major American orchestras, including the NBC Symphony at the invitation of Toscanini. Michael Schade Hailed as one of the world's leading tenors, German-Canadian tenor Michael Schade performs in all of the leading opera and concert houses. His art form embraces a wide repertoire of performances in opera, recital, concert, and recording. In the 2012/13 season, Michael Schade's close collaboration continues with the Wiener Staatsoper, where he has performed all of the leading Mozart and Strauss roles of his voice category, as well as an extensive bel canto repertoire. He can be frequently heard at the Staatsoper Hamburg, Metropolitan Opera and the Canadian Opera Company, and has also appeared at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Liceu Barcelona, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Opera Bastille in Paris, as well as in Amsterdam. Michael Schade has been a regular guest at the Salzburg Festival for many years. The CD recording will be released on June 7th, the DVD and Blu-ray recordings on June 21st, and can already be ordered online.
