Default MATINEE Directed by Joe Dante

MATINEE is one of my favorite movies. It's a great nostalgic look back at a simpler time, and a time of movie showmanship, played out against a threat to our national security, which makes it relevant still today.

Universal never seemed to care much about this movie, (nor does it seem to care about others I like, even ones that were among their top-grossers) and it took a long time before they even bothered to release a DVD. Meanwhile it was licensed out to another company, where it appeared without any extras, despite the fact that the director has thoughtfully archived a bunch of fascinating and fun things that could easily be included. Uni's own DVD when it finally came out is again a stripped-down affair.

Now I'm yearning for a Blu Ray, and again Universal does nothing, while a foreign company has put them to shame by releasing MATINEE with several extras! Unfortunately it's on a locked Region 2 disc. That, plus the untimely failure of my top of the line LG BDP, makes me want to buy an all-region player.

Let's start the discussion among fans of MATINEE so maybe Uni will at least notice that people want to buy it.

It's a shame you do not have an all region player because Matinee looks wonderful. It comes with a slipcover and the blu ray case is black.

Doesn't that French version have forced French subtitles?

No. Picture is good, sound is good, extras are good if not abundant.

Are you talking about the French Blu? There is an Oppo player where I work, I wonder if they can play it. How much is the French one in $US?

With the Carlotta US distribution deal in the works, I'm hopeful that we'll be seeing a stateside Blu-ray release sooner rather than later.
