Default Peaky Blinders (BBC2)

The gang that ran Birmingham's Small Heath district named after their caps which had razor blades sewn into them. The series got off to an excellent start thanks to tight pacing, evocative settings and a quality cast led by Cillian Murphy and Sam Neill. Accents were a bit shaky, venturing as far as Black Country with a bit of Liverpool but nothing too offensively seterotyped. This could have been a true epic crime story if it had covered the thirty years of gang wars that raged across Birmingham but that would have required a commitment beyond the BBC's limited finances, instead the series focuses on a neglected period of British history, the aftermath of World War 1 where the government was terrified of Communist revolution and anyone who appeared slightly subversive was beaten or simply disappeared. The series also scores for representing Birmingham's diverse communities of immigrants. Blu ray is out on October 21st. For more Birmingham crime see the classic 70s BBC series Gangsters or try the book of short stories Birmingham Noir.
