Ar no Surge - A mix between Ar tonelico and Ciel no Surge

Gust have been busy with New Atelier Rorona, but however, fans of Ar Tonelico and Ciel no Surge will also have something to look forward to, as this week’s issue of Dengeki PlayStation reveals that their upcoming title, Ar no Surge, will be some sort of mix between the two games.

According to the magazine report, the game will be a RPG directed by Akira Tsuchiya, known for directing the three Ar Tonelico games, along with Ar Tonelico and Phantasy Star Universe illustrator “ntny” as the character designer.

The world of Ar no Surge will revolve around magic and the power of thoughts. Flight Unit, the studio that has worked on several of Gust’s graphics and animation will create high quality models for the game. Their work will emphasize lighting and shading of the game’s sci-fi fantasy setting, with extra detail on metallic textures.

While the name Ar no Surge is indeed a combination of the two franchises, Ar Tonelico and Ciel no Surge, the relation between the games have not been revealed. However, the magazine reports that the language spoken in the world will be the same as the one from Ciel no Surge and the story will take place at a different time in the same world.

The protagonist is a young man named Delta Lantanoil, who appeared after Felion’s partition wall was opened. He has been protecting the town from Sharl, as part of the elite forces called “PLASM”. After a certain incident, he was discharged from the group, and is currently running a diner. His partner Acies is some sort of humanoid weapon.

The planet La Ciela is where the Genomes lived. The Sharl use song magic to kidnap the humans who have no means of communication. Meanwhile, after the partition wall opened, someone who lost the ability to perform ancient song magic appears. There’s also a certain township that has ancients who’ve awakened from cold-sleeps living together with the modern people. There’s a heaven ruler princess who governs Felion, a town where humans reside.

Ar no Surge will be an orthodox RPG that is split between three parts of towns, field and battle. However, the battle system will be a something of a hybrid system that uses turn-based command battles. The heroine character will use song magic from the back, while the protagonist protects her while fighting in the frontline. There will be some sort of action element to the battles, including a “Defend” system, according to Dengeki PlayStation.

You’ll be switching between Delta and Acies as you progress through the scenario and explore dungeons. There will also be a special feature that can be accessed through internet connectivity.

Finally, there’s a system that involves a person’s heart, called the “Genometric System”. This system will be used to power up the characters. Additionally, there will also be a synthesis system, that Gust games have been known for having.

Ar no Surge is slated for release on January 30, 2014, for PlayStation 3.

Gust is working on the second game in the Surge Concerto series and Ar no Surge takes place in the same world as Ciel no Surge. The game is split into three parts: town <-> field <-> battle.

In town you can visit a synthesis shop where you can strengthen parts and get recovery items. Remember the Dive Shops from Ar tonelico? Ar no Surge has something similar. Playes can enter a character’s troubled heart and when you mend wounds from the past using the Genometric system.

Unlike Ciel no Surge, Ar no Surge has a battle system where you protect a heroine who casts song magic.

During a recent Surge Concerto talk show at ufotable Cinema, fans joined a special event featuring Ion and Cas’ voice actresses who may have teased a little something for the upcoming Ar no Surge for PlayStation 3.

After showing Ciel no Surge’s most memorable scenes on the big screen, Gust talked a little about Ciel no Surge’s final chapter called “The Emperor part” where Cas will be playing a huge role, to the point that it may seem as if she’s the main character. The last DLC chapter is set to be released this December.

The talks soon shifted to Gust’s upcoming game, Ar no Surge, which is expected to be a cross between Ar tonelico and Ciel No Surge, where it was revealed that the voice of Ion (Ai Kakuma) and Cas (Minase Inori) will have a role in Ar no Surge.

While it has not been confirmed whether they will be reprising their roles as the voices for their previous characters, upon being introduced, the two voice actresses excitedly shouted out “Ion and Cas will be in it!” just as the event host quickly responded by saying “Hey! Nothing has been mentioned about Ion and Cas yet!”

Finally, before the end of the event, they announced that a special app for Ar NoSurge will be released sometime before the game. Playing the app will have some sort of benefit for the actual game when it comes out. Gust will be announcing more information regarding the app in the near future.

In an earlier report, voice actresses for the Ar no Surge teased that Ion and Cas from Ciel no Surge would be in Gust’s upcoming PlayStation 3 game. This week’s issue of Famitsu magazine shares new details and also confirms that the two characters will in fact be in the game.

According to the magazine report, Ion and Cas will be appearing in a more mature form. Ion, the enthusiastic young girl who happens to understand the meaning of the universe, will be about four to five years older than she was in Ciel no Surge.

Meanwhile, Cas will be part of an elite taskforce of the Genemes. On the weekends, Cas spends her time helping out at the diner where Ar no Surge protagonist Delta works.

Battles will revolve around a two-man team between Delta and the heroine, where you’ll be performing attacks to take on enemies on the field, which indicates enemy positions and their groups. While the heroine uses her song magic from the back, as Delta, you’ll be responsible for protecting her while fighting enemies. There will also be a guard command to help make things easier.

By leveling up your Harmonics level and filling it up, you’ll be able to activate your song magic. The magazine report has yet to confirm whether Ion will be participating in the fights. Takayama Toshiaki will be in charge of designing Ion, while Yocky will be in charge of Cas’ design.

Atelier makers Gust recently revealed that Ion and Cas from Ciel no Surge will be part of their upcoming game, Ar no Surge, an RPG with unique two-man battles. Earleir today, Gust shared a first look at the game, as well as battle system details and character designs.

Felion was formerly a labor camp for the Cold Sleep Pod, but it is now a proper city bustling with people. After the heaven ruler princess had awakened after her thousand year sleep, it had come to her knowledge that there were others living outside the partition wall that blocks the entrance of Felion.

Since then, she had freed the city, and it had become what we see in the above images.

The PLASMA are an organization that serves under the heaven ruler princess, consisting of an ancient race who’ve awakened from a cold-sleep. Their main duty is to protect the people living outside the wall from Sharl assaults.

As previously reported, the battle system will revolve around a two-man team, where the hero will have to protect the heroine, who can perform powerful song magic. Utilizing skills and attacking enemies will increase your Harmonics level, used to activate the heroine’s song magic.

An important part of Ar no Surge’s action-based combat, will be timing your defense in order to reduce your overall damage taken. This is done by pressing the guard button just before the heroine is about to get hit.

The higher your burst value is from your attacks, the more your Harmonics Gauge will increase. The hero, who is in the frontlines, will have access to various skills which further increases the gauge than basic attacks. Increasing your Harmonics level will also make it possible for the heroine to assist with song magic.

Song magic comes in various forms. In addition to offensive use in combat, it can be used to start fires, or heal he injured; however, it is said that those who can use song magic in the world of Ar no Surge are very scarce.

Who knows if Gust will make a new Ar tonelico game, but Ar no Surge is sort of like a cross between the Ciel no Surge and Gust’s RPG series. For example, Ar no Surge has Song Magic. Reminiscent of Ar tonelico, Ar no Surge has a two person party where you protect the heroine while she chants Song Magic. Hitting enemies increases the Harmonics level and timing blocks reduces the amount of damage you take.

There are fifteen types of Song Magic in Ar no Surge like Bridal Launch which was drawn by Yoshi Mata.

The story in Ar no Surge unfolds from two perspectives. Players switch between scenarios with Delta & Cas or Ashes & Ion. The Talk Matter system from Ar tonelico Qoga returns too and you can unlock different conversations depending on your relationship level. These conversations take place at the hot springs where you strengthen characters with the purification system.

Players can install Genometallica crystals in a character’s head, chest, arms, legs, or belly. Here’s a look at Cas and Delta.

Gust are porting Ar no Surge, the follow-up to Ciel no Surge, to PlayStation Vita, this week’s issue of Famitsu magazine reports. The Vita version will be titled Ar no Surge Plus, retaining the naming convention from Gust’s Atelier ports.

As per usual, Ar no Surge Plus will include new costumes, compatibility with the Vita’s touch screen and additional purification ceremony characters.

Also coming to the Vita is an offline version of Ciel noSurge, says Famitsu. This version of the game has reportedly been reprogrammed from scratch.

Both Ar no Surge Plus and Ciel no Surge Offline will be released on October 2nd in Japan.

Tecmo Koei announced Ar no Surge: Ode to an Unborn Star will be the first English localized game in Gust’s Surge Concerto series. The PlayStation 3 title has a battle system reminiscent of the Ar tonelico series since it has song magic. Speaking of Ar tonelico, the game features returning characters from Gust’s RPG series and characters from Ciel no Surge.

Delta and Casty are the main characters in the sci-fi RPG which follows a society that has been roaming through space for 2,000 years.

Ar no Surge: Ode to an Unborn Star for PlayStation 3 will be released digitally and in stores in Europe on September 26. The game will have European and Japanese voiceovers. As of now, this news is just for Europe. Tecmo Koei says a U.S. release is undecided. The PlayStation Vita version, which was just announced in Japan was not announced either.

Tecmo KOEI America reported on Wednesday that Gust's Ar no Surge: Ode to an Unborn Star PlayStation 3 role-playing game is heading to the United States. The game is already set for physical and digital release in Europe on September 26. Tecmo KOEI Europe describes the story:

Ar no Surge is a Fantasy, Sci-fi, ‘7 Dimension’ RPG, that takes place in a world where music and song can create magic. It tells the compelling story of a civilization that lost their planet and has been roaming the edge of space for 2000 years in search of a new home.

The player follows two sets of characters: Delta and Casty, whose goal is to protect humanity and save the world, and Ion & Earthes, who are trying to find Ion a way home to Earth. The player can interchange between both pairs and soon discover a way to combine their storylines and strengths to eventually solve the mystery that shrouds their ongoing struggle.

Much like most titles developed by Gust, this is an intricately deep turn-based RPG and it includes a detailed synthesis system for players to create their own items. Additionally, Ar No Surge: Ode to an Unborn Star has a unique character development system that focuses more on the bonds/relationships between the main characters than their success in missions and battles, as the player's party grows stronger if the characters have a closer relationship.

Additionally, when in battle, character pairs fight together. One is always the first line of defence, attacking enemies in melee with knives and swords while protecting the other, who is weaving a song to fend off enemies. The longer the song lasts the more damage it creates- not only to enemies visible on screen, but to ones that are in line to attack.

Ar no Surge shares ties with Gust's earlier Ar tonelico RPGs. Ar no Surge director Akira Tsuchiya also worked on Ar tonelico, and administrator Shurelia from the first Ar tonelico PlayStation 2 game, 2006's Ar tonelico: Melody of Elemia (Aru toneriko: Sekai no Owari de Utai Tsudzukeru Shōjo), played a major role in Ar no Surge's story.

The game also shares ties with the first Surge Concerto game, Ciel no Surge ~Ushinawareta Hoshi e Sasagu Shi~. In addition to Shikata, Haruka Shimotsuki, Noriko Mitose, Yoshino Nanjou, and Origa contributed music to the game.

The game features the voice cast of Kōsuke Miyoshi as Delta Lantanoir, Inori Minase as Casti Rianoit, and Ai Kakuma as Ion.

Gust released Ar no Surge ~Umareizuru Hoshi e Inoru Shi~ in Japan on March 6. The regular edition sold for 7,140 yen (about US$68), the "Agent Pack" special edition sold for 10,290 yen (US$98), and a download edition sold for 6,300 yen (US$60).

The Ar tonelico game inspired the original video anime project of the same name. NIS America released the Ar tonelico games in North America.

Well then you should buy Atelier Rorona Plus since it's on PS3 and is not download only. But anyways the whole purpose on why the Plus versions of Totori and Meruru even exist is because they were simple ports and Gust does seem to enjoy porting their games(though I wish they did even more ports or even a HD Collection would be awesome of like the Ar tonelico games, Atelier games that never reached America, etc.).

Atelier Rorona Plus was not just a simple port of the game that just includes all of the DLC from the PS3 version(Rorona didn't have any DLC but referring to Totori, Meruru, Ayesha and likely Escha & Logy in the near future) and just adding some additional costumes and dungeons. Rorona Plus is like a full blown remake of the game which is why I named the thread it's more than just a Plus version(though Tecmo Koei America and Europe kept the Plus title to match the previous games).
