Default Chaplin's Mutual Comedies (1916-1917)

David Shepard has posted details over at Nitrateville regarding a Blu-Ray release of the Chaplin Mutual Comedies slated for 2014. It looks like all the films have been restored from new 2K scans and will be presented with a choice of either a piano or orchestral score. Sounds good to me!

Definitely picking this up. I just started watching some of these through Netflix, and they're endlessly entertaining.

Is it possible that we'll see a Blu Ray verison of the Chaplin Collection? I know some of his popular films (Gold Rush, City Lights, Great Dictator) are already available, but it'd be neat if they did a criterion Blu Ray release of the Chaplin Collection

Excellent. I love Chaplin so I will pick this up without a doubt.

I just watched "The Immigrant" short today on Au Revoir Les Enfants (another great film) and I was highly entertained.

Possible. Likely? Your guess, but if so, it'll be after they release The Kid & The Circus which means you'd better be real patient and not too upset if it doesn't materialize.

Oh yeah, great news about the Mutuals.

Omg...you read my mind!! That has got to be one of the best if not THE best virtuoso comedic silent performance ever! One of my favorites of his shorts!

Color me interested. I love the four Chaplin films that have been released by Criterion, and would definitely be up for some more of his works.

I've still got the big, bulky 4-disk Image DVD box, of which 2 are documentaries.
I've been wanting to sell this back, but waiting for a more efficient Chaplin Mutual collection to come along. Let's hope they follow through.

(The Pawn Shop was some of the first Chaplin I ever saw in college, and it's still the best one to start on:

I think Janus Films owns the rights in the U.S. to everything now. I am hoping for an announcement next week as the Tramp will turn 100 on February 7th.

Nope, the Mutuals are definitely still owned by David Shepard head of Film Preservation Associates

I'm under the impression that Chaplin's estate owns the rights to all his movies. That is why every one still survives. He did restore them but I don't think he owns them.

The Mutuals aren't under the control of the Estate.

Someone at NitrateVille sums it up:

Quote:
Criterion is only releasing the Chaplin films owned by the Chaplin Estate, which are all of the independent films he made after co-founding United Artists along with the First National shorts he did under contract shortly before and during the early years of UA. The Mutuals, Essanays, and Keystones are outside of the estate's control
Furthermore, David Shepard said this in Nov 13:

Quote:
Even though Film Preservation Associates has an unbreakable chain of title to the Chaplin Mutuals
