Couldn't find a place that this was blatantly posted, so here goes.
I don't have a 3DTV yet, but I purchase 3D Combo Packs for futureproofing my collection. Sometimes studios release a title in 3D without a stand-alone 2D Disc (Sony does this a lot) yet they play in both 3D & 2D. My question is for anyone who purchased the "Blu-ray 3D+DVD" Combo Pack releases of titles like: Megamind, How to Train Your Dragon, Shrek, etc... Do they play in 2D on a standard TV/BD set-up? (The reason for this post is because a user review said the 2D feature was not included. Yet, the rear art suggests it can play in 2D) Thanks in advance for any help. |

Some of the 3D blu rays that came with TVs (as promotion) were simply 3D only. For example my copy of Alice in Wonderland 3D.
My Copy of the whole Skrek collection will only play in 3D on a 3D setup but will play fine in 2d setup. (It doesn't give you any choice so if you want to watch it in 2D on a 3D capable system you have to dis-able 3D in some part of your system.) I sold back a bunch of the Dreamworks Blus when the 3D copies were on sale (HTTYD, MegaMind, Monsters Vs Aliens.) I don't care about the special features. I know of a single disc in which the 2D version on the 3D copy is considered sub-par and that's Underworld Evolution. So, I have the 3D and I picked up the 2D also on sale. There are several titles where I have both the 2D copy and then the 3D copy even though the 3D copy has both versions. This is usually because I had the 2D copy first. I keep both...I don't mind having the stand alone 2D copy also. -Brian |

I can't remember all of them without going through my collection, but House of Wax 3D is a single disc release that plays both 2D and 3D. Creature from the Black Lagoon, Dredd, and Spiders. Also, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Monster House. Bait and Born to Be Wild are single disc 3D 2D Blu-ray, but also contain a DVD.
I think any Lionsgate 3D movies are single disc. Last edited by atomik kinder; 10-06-2013 at 02:46 PM. |

And to actually answer the OP's question, a 2D player can play a single-disk hybrid in 2D if it offers 2D on the menu, but not a single-disk 3D-only like Oz:tGaP. And if you want to get a head start, most 3D Blu players (and the PS3/4) can also play "normal" Blu-rays in 2D on a 2D set, so you wouldn't lose anything by upgrading hardware now.
