France MICHAEL HANEKE Box Set 12 Films

I just checked Amazon France for an update on specs and it seems as if English subtitles will be included. And for approximately $112 this set is the deal of the year!

Great. Now I just need to find someone who is willing to buy all my Haneke DVDs.

I am highly suspect of this, only because The White Ribbon and Amour have also been included. I know that TF1's discs of Benny's Video and Funny Games (1997) had English subs, but I would wait for explicit confirmation that all of the films are English-friendly, since the current TF1 French BDs of The White Ribbon and Amour are not.

Jeez, if these really are English friendly, there is no way I can pass it up. I recently came very close to pulling the trigger on AE's Haneke DVD set too.

English-speakers interested in Haneke's work should keep an eye on Artificial Eye in 2014.

Is there further news regarding this set (specs, confirmation of English subtitles, ...)?

Any further confirmation on English subs? The release date is coming up and I'm still on the edge if I should believe Amazon and keep my order.

With French releases, we are unlikely to know for certain until after the release date. However, since the specs on Amazon.fr state that the set comes with English subtitles, you may be able to get a refund (since you are an international customer) and keep the set if it does not.

However, my advice would be to cancel and await confirmation, because as I have said before, my suspicion is that only some of these titles have English subtitles, not all of them.

Does anyone know yet if all of the films have English subtitles? I'm chomping at the bit to import this even though I have half of these on blu already!

I received the Haneke box set today. Just couldn't resist the great price!

The Blu-ray discs all come in sleeves that share the same design, having "Le cinéma de Michael Haneke" and the original film poster art on the front. It's actually quite nice.

On first look all films appear to have received recent HD transfers. Only the made-for-TV film Le château looks quite soft and could be based on a TV master.

What's probably of interest for most users here: For the most part the set is not English friendly. (UPDATE: see below)

I'll go through the set and the available audio/subtitle options film by film.

Le septième continent
German with forced French subtitles
German with forced English subtitles

Benny's video
German with forced French subtitles
German with forced English subtitles

71 fragments d'une chronologie du hasard
German with forced French subtitles
German with forced English subtitles

Funny Games
German with forced French subtitles
German with forced English subtitles
French dub
French dub with English subtitles
(Note: It's not possible to play the French dub with French subtitles)

Le château
German with forced French subtitles
German with forced English subtitles

Code inconnu
French
French with English subtitles

La pianiste
French

Le temps du loup
French
French with English subtitles

Caché
French
French with French hard-of-hearing subtitles
(Note: The French subtitles are colored according to a special code and if no one is talking three dots '...' are permanently displayed)

Funny Games U.S.
English with forced French subtitles
French dub
(Note: It's not possible to play the French dub with French subtitles)

Le ruban blanc
German with forced French subtitles
French dub
French dub, including French narration for the visually impaired
Additionally all three audio tracks can be played with normal French subtitles or French hard-of-hearing subtitles

Amour
French
French, including French narration for the visually impaired
Additionally both tracks can be played with French hard-of-hearing subtitles
(Note: The French subtitles are colored according to a special code and if no one is talking three dots '...' are permanently displayed)

So in summary: Only three films are English friendly, namely Funny Games, Code inconnu and Le temps du loup. Additionally Funny Games U.S. is English friendly if you don't mind the forced subtitles or your player can remove them anyway. If you don't speak German and/or French you should probably avoid this set.

UPDATE: Seven films are English friendly, namely Le septième continent, Benny's video, 71 fragments d'une chronologie du hasard, Funny Games, Le château, Code inconnu and Le temps du loup. Additionally Funny Games U.S. is English friendly if you don't mind the forced subtitles or your player can remove them anyway. If you don't speak German and/or French this set might still be of interest to you especially if you already own some of the French only titles and if you take the great price into consideration. It's still 69,99 EUR at Amazon.fr. However you might want to wait whether a rumored UK or US set is announced in 2014.

Thank you very much BobaFett! I'll have to wait for the UK set that Pro-B teased a few weeks ago. I hope the UK set is as nice as this one.

thank you BobaFett for all the details.

very deceiving.. Even if I don't speak German I do not stand forced subtitles.

And in the single blu-ray edition of "White Ribbon" that I already have the french subtitles aren't forced!

I'm not going to buy it, and that's too bad because I was very happy with this release

I took a closer look at the titles in this box and have to correct BobaFett's post on a few details. The earlier titles actually DO have English subtitles selectable from the "Supplements" menu. They're listed on the individual sleeves.

Le septième continent
Benny's Video
71 fragments d'une chronologie du hasard
Le château

I tested them all and they are there.

The only titles that have NO English options are:

Caché
La pianiste
Le ruban blanc
Amour

Alas, even though the Funny Games U.S. sleeve lists deleted scenes as a supplement, they are actually not on the disc. That particular movie has no extras at all.

Thank you, jdrouette. I just checked what you said and it is indeed correct that these four films have English subtitles.

I originally missed the English subs on those titles as I didn't expect them to be in the supplements section. Usually French discs have a "versions" menu for language setup, so I considered the sleeve to be a misprinting.

I think this might change the conclusions I drew in my summary regarding English friendliness and make this set indeed interesting for some people here, especially if you already own some of the French only titles.

I've updated my above post with this information.

And only $95 including shipping to US is awesome! The only film that I would be unable to watch is THE PIANO TEACHER. The other films without English subs are available in our region anyway so really just buying the set for his early films.

I hope the films will be available as single releases in the UK so I can pick up TPT. With the new information I will import the set.

Contrary to what's written on the back cover, there are no deleted scenes on the Funny Games (remake) disc. The transfer is OK but my projector says it's interlaced. Need to recheck.

I got this set today. Just a few stray thoughts.

I was surprised to see each film was in its own separate amaray case. I was expecting cardboard cases or a book type deal (like the UK Hitchcock set).

I still find it very strange the The Piano Teacher doesn't have English subtitles. Amour, Cache, and The White Ribbon not having them doesn't both me too bad, I can get them from AE for a very decent price (and I've already got Cache). Plus, it's not like that is even a cut off of English subs, since Time of the Wolf comes after and has subs.

I am very much looking forward to working through the films that are English friendly in this set, as Funny Games (US) is the only one I have seen, and I really love Cache/Amour/The White Ribbon.

Also, my copy of the original Funny Games was open, while all the other titles were individually sealed.

My review of the set which I own and love.

If you're buying Haneke for packaging then you're the exact target he's viciously attacking in at least 3 of his films... just saying

Amazon UK says it doesnt ship to the US. Anyone know the best way to get this? It looks like this is still the only way to get a few of these on bluray.
