Criterion It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963)

It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World Blu-ray

Quote:

Harris using visual and audio material from the longer original road-show version—including some scenes that have been returned to the film here for the first time—with 5.1 surround Master Audio soundtrack on the Blu-ray

Talk show from 1974 hosted by director Stanley Kramer and featuring Mad World actors Sid Caesar, Buddy Hackett, and Jonathan Winters
Press interview from 1963 featuring Kramer and members of the film’s cast
Interviews recorded for the 2000 AFI program 100 Years . . . 100 Laughs, featuring comedians and actors discussing the influence of the film

The Last 70mm Film Festival, a program from 2012 featuring cast and crew members from Mad World at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, hosted by Billy Crystal
Selection of humorist and voice-over artist Stan Freberg’s original TV and radio advertisements for the film, with a new introduction by Freberg
Original and rerelease trailers, and rerelease radio spots
Two Blu-rays and three DVDs, with all content available in both formats
PLUS: A booklet featuring an essay by film critic Lou Lumenick

Quote:
Stanley Kramer followed his Oscar-winning Judgment at Nuremberg with this sobering investigation of American greed. Ah, who are we kidding? It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, about a group of strangers fighting tooth and nail over buried treasure, is the most grandly harebrained movie ever made, a pileup of slapstick and borscht-belt-y one-liners performed by a nonpareil cast, including Milton Berle, Sid Caesar, Ethel Merman, Mickey Rooney, Spencer Tracy, Jonathan Winters, and a boatload of other playing-to-the-rafters comedy legends. For sheer scale of silliness, Kramer’s wildly uncharacteristic film is unlike any other, an exhilarating epic of tomfoolery.

Oh man. This looks beautiful. Although I already have this one and it's a great transfer, this has so many more extras and additional footage, I think I'm going to have to break down and get this one.

Great! We knew it was coming! The 197 minute cut will be most welcome

Holy crap!

I got the MGM release for my dad since it's one of his favorites, but I'm totally gonna pick this up for myself in the next summer sale.

I may have to double dip on this. A great movie from my childhood. One of the local TV stations used to show movies at 4 pm. This had to be split up over two days. Ah, memories.

I thought the transfer was good on the MGM release, although I thought the contrast was a bit high (seems to happen with releases of that era). Hopefully the Criterion is just as sharp but a hair less hot.

Agreed, a little too "contrasty," but otherwise I thought it was a fine transfer. I want this release, but I'm not going to pre-order it. I want to see the reviews first.

Haven't seen this one yet, but from what I've heard, it's definitely worth a blind buy.

It kind of pisses me off that I just recently purchased IAMMV and I thought it was great in the A/V department...sigh. Why can't they license something new, that hasn't been released before? They clearly have deals with MGM, so why can't they license some noirs like great Crimes of Passion?
It is what it is...
I definitely plan on buying it again though.
