Default Most Embarassing HD-DVD Threads......

Guys,

For our own entertainment and to act as a useful database to demonstrate the unreliability of DUD-FUD posters, I suggest we make this thread a repository for links to specific threads / posts that have been posted by hd-dvd fanboys that have since proved to be shown to be the total pile of FUD that we were saying they were.

Here is my starter - See hmurchinson on the hd-dvd.com forum musing about how Disney & Fox would go red in 2007 ;-)

This has got to be the *king* of HD DVD crap threads, no surprise who the originator was:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=898672

BTW, hmurchinson is a self-admitted paid Toshiba representative. It's in the AVS archives somewhere.

Have you noticed how desperate Blu-ray fans have gotten? 6 months ago they strolled around..nose up in the air staring down at the HD DVD peasants. My how things have changed. While we provide solid data about player and media sales they concoct boorish elementary level arguments to justify their views on a format that is struggling. I get a good laugh at this stuff.
This is fantastic, how times have changed!

Here's an embarrassing rdjam post from August of last year. The thread itself is very good. Roger Dressler of Dolby shows up, destroys rdjam's mythology, and he goes nuts:

Given that we thought it was an improved codec, 640 kbps should sound better with DD+ than DD. Whatever am I going to do now? I suppose I am glad that you have broken the news that DD+ is really no improvement over DD, to avoid any future disappointments. I have to hand it to your company for honesty tho. Who else would have gone out their way to let us know their new + version sounded no better than the decade-old grandpappy version. Somebody in Dolby must have been really pissed off to hear that, so it was very brave of you to tell us. Big up respect!

(...although, having learnt this bombshell, some of us may now want to spend a little quality time with a DTS-HD or WMA soundtrack or two...)

That aside, your wording gives the impression that both HD DVD and Blurray run DD+ at 640 K. I had not known this to be the case either? (please confirm). It was my understanding that HD DVD ran at a higher rate on most releases, than the 640 K of Blurray. I know that no one has done the maximum 3 mbps yet, but surely there are DD+ HD DVD titles running at higher than 640 K?

I'm especially impressed with your dedication to a customer like Blurray, especially considering the fact that most of their releases to date do not even include a DD+ soundtrack. Oh I know that it's probably just due to some silly oversight like not having a big enough disc - but I'm sure they'll appreciate your candor when the time comes that they can actually author a good disc with your kit on (as if they wouldn't anyway)

Respect! DD+ 640K sounds the Same as DD 640 K - wow, quite an acheivement. Hats of to Toshiba for going out of their way to make your two codecs the gold standard for HD DVD players (over the DTS or WMA alternatives) despite your feelings that DD+ sounds better on Blurray - what standup guys they are!

...

Wow - I can't believe that Toshiba would go and put DD+ decoders in their players if they sound the same - what a waste of royalties! You guys must be really annoyed at them handing over that cash when they obviously didn't need to

.....

It sounds like you went to a tremendous amount of effort to make your next-generation DD+ codec sound the same as the 10 year old DD codec. I'm so happy (sobs uncontrollably) to hear that, despite numerous obstacles and technological advancements, you were able to acheive that result.

That seems to be something you may share with other great companies like Sony

Embarrassing indeed. But then again embarassement would require some level of self reflection and logic

How bout this cnet post:

http://asia.cnet.com/blogs/cyberpers...tm?id=63001157

Quote:
Within three days, HD-DVD format significantly increased its installed base and sold nearly as many as the best-selling stand-alone Blu-ray DVD player has sold since its launch.
...
In my opinion , Toshiba has the upper hand in the format war, although the number of installations of Blu-ray is much more than HD-DVD, but most of these installations are in form of Playstation 3 consoles.

Buying a PS3 is not a sign of consumer interest in Blu-Ray. You should consider that sales of Toshiba HD-DVD standalone players outpaced Blu-ray units by nearly 5 times as many units and this number has increased during the last weekend.
The whole article is classic. He acknowledges Blu-ray's massive hardware advantage. So how can he say HD-DVD holds the upper hand?

Oh, that's right...logic just doesn't apply.

EDIT: I like the third comment by Brodee, in which he states that 480p is high definition. Gee, why did I spend all that money on my 1080p LCD then?
