Default Mov Files Now Play !!!! Yipee!!

Hi,

I tried like heck to convert the 1080p Cars trailer from quicktime's MOV format to MP4 today without losing quality along the way only to discover...

The PS3 now plays MOV files directly!!!

I think this must be new since 2.0 because I don't remember it ever doing this before.

If this is true, it means I can play my home movies from our digital camcorder directly on the PS3 from the SD card the camera uses! No more burning DVDs!

Awesome.

I wonder if there are any other little hidden things in there. I've been searching through the detail on the playstation site and didn't see anything about .mov files...there has to be other things.

Eh it still doesn't play divx or xvid? Then I will be insanely happy..

Will the PS3 play Video_TS folders off of the hard drive?

That would be nice. Though... sadly I think we all know not terribly likely.

This .mov (hello delicious little pun) might be a step to make the PS3 browser more internet friendly.

I'm sure you still have to transfer the .mov to the video list, it won't play directly in the web browser if that's what you mean.

Very good news, i read on us.playstation forum that it also plays 5.1 audio streamed from your pc?!! didnt test it yet.

but wouldnt that mean it could play certain backups of a red brand much easier now

Which video was this?

I just tried moving a Rush Hour 3 1080p trailer (from Apple.com/trailers) across to the PS3 but it didn't detect the movie on my PSP memory stick. I've put the movie in the root of the MS and in the dedicated videos folder but it's not detected even when I TRIANGLE button > display all.
