Default Blu-ray chat room?

I'm bored as hell and am trying to find some sort of Blu-ray chat. Anybody know of anywhere good to go? This is the first time I've missed AOL in seven years.

There is an IRC chat room, #blu-ray on EFnet.

I was hanging out there for a month or so, occaisional good chats however there's one particular "format neutral" aka pro-HD DVD guy who is always there, if you say anything positive about Blu-ray or get even slightly excited about pro-Blu news, he sits there for hours mocking you and throwing out the usual (and some new) HD DVD talking points.

I asked the mod to ban him but he wouldn't so I don't go there anymore. If I wanted to argue with HD DVD people there are plenty of places I could go.

The last things before I quit were along the lines of "You and I both know HD DVD really won the Transformers week" ... oh, and the amazing "I can't wait to see how happy you are when Warner goes HD DVD exclusive in January".

So yeah anyway Lokus if you decide to ban him I'll be happy to rejoin.

I was in there earlier and there was a list of people who I guess were in the room, but nobody was saying anything. I don't know if I was doing something wrong or what.

Well it does go dead for periods of time. Kris is the HD DVD guy to watch out for.

IRC is very hard to control.

I'd talk to anyone from here over AIM.

Default upconversion

Hello. For some reason, newbies like me apparently cannot start threads. All I want to to is ask one simple question. I've ordered a 42" Sharp Aquos LCD tv because of all the great reviews and because it will deliver true 1080p definition. Now I need an HD source. I've already decided to go with blu-ray, but I'm having a hard time deciding between that $550 BDP-S500 Sony player (mostly out of sheer brand loyalty; never had a problem with a Sony component) and a PS3 - probably the one with the bigger hard drive. I have no interest in satellite or cable sources; movies and games only. My question, then: most of the BD players I've checked into advertise "upscaling", which seems to mean artificially creating a hi-res looking picture from a 480 source. Does the PS3 "upscale"? This will probably make up my mind.
Thanks,
Rudi

While the thread you chose to post in is questionable, and funny to me for some reason . . .

Yes, the PS3 upscales and does quite a good job of it. Right now, the PS3 is one of the best values in a Blu-ray player available. Easy firmware updates, fastest loading times, arguably the best picture quality . . . there are a lot of threads about the PS3 and it's capabilities, but in short, yes, it does what you're asking.

The only standalone I'd get right now would be a Pioneer 95 or the new Panasonic. But the PS3 is basically futureproof, which unfortunately may not be true of some of the standalones available.

Blu-ray chat rooms? You mean while watching a film you can chat with others online or something? I haven't seen that extra feature yet.

Are there any Blu-ray therapy groups yet? .... But I guess that would be needed for the HD DUD group, not us.

Hows bout support groups for people who's other doesn't want to have a movie on tonight? Or for those who haven't bought a new BD in the past 3 days?

If you have spare time, watch a BD movie

At the time I was watching Heroes S1 with my fiance . . . which I find to be an incredibly boring show. Started off good, but just got blah. Ironically, Ali Larter was playing on a PS3 in one of the episodes though, which I found funny.

Just click on the link in my signature and it will allow you to chat via a web based interface (may require the installation of java runtime). I own the channel and try to keep it under control. It isn't always active but with more people slowly joining I can see it picking up. I'm usually on and try to make it a friendly environment. The bots in the channel will automatically announce added reviews, movies and news from blu-ray.com and highdefdigest.com. A very nice little feature so when chatting you can see the news posted.

Don't be worried about certain people claiming some standalone players may not be futureproof. I have the Sammy 1200 and it is a great machine , it upconverts BETTER then the PS3 (which I also own) and has analog audio 5.1 outputs for PCM sound (which the PS3 does NOT) . The only future update I MAY (and I say may) not get is the fluff called PIP which I don't waste my time with anyway. I enjoy the movie and the sound. Hope this helps.

And welcome to the Blu Side .

Also, it's unsecure. Everyone can claim they're one of the mods/admins from this site. The nicknames aren't registered... I know you can, but they aren't now.

Well I really don't know how to prove to you that I run the channel but thats neither here nor there. Those that want to join can. I have no idea why it isn't allowing you to connect. If you are usng McAfee or another virus program it may be blocking the ports required to connect to IRC. Just make sure you allow the client to install the java runtime. Anywho, hope to see people there and if not this is always the place to be.

I think this is a great ideal if Blu-ray.com started its own chatroom where members can actually chat instead of thru posts.
