Saw this two days ago at a midnight screening and loved it. I didn't see the original Korean version, so I had nothing to compare this to. I personally thought it was great. Pre-Ordered.

I'll certainly watch it. I don't mind Spike Lee in dosages and I really like the cast for this. I've seen the original a few times. Yeah, it's a fairly decent revenge flick but it's not some sort of masterpiece that shouldn't be touch or something :/

It's a film that relies heavily on violent and surreal images as well a top performance from the lead geezer, Choi min ski. That's about it for me, tells me nothing about the theme of revenge and all the consequences. It's a film that's pure shock value. Still entertaining but not amazing as people like to make out.

I'm sure this is a pointless remake but so was The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, and that got good reviews. I will see this this week. James Ransone is underrated.

Yes - fully agree... watch the original.

IMO, the Spike Lee remake is simplistic and really unsophisticated in comparison.

The original is really worth a watch... but it will be interesting to see how you'd view it (having seen the US version first). I came to the original Oldboy without much story info, so it was interesting to watch the story unfold/twist & turn.

I watched the original for the second time a few days ago - the amount of stuff I picked up from it the second time around was amazing - a really great film, recommended to all who haven't seen it! I own the Canadian Vengeance Trilogy Blu-ray set and look forward to watching the other two films in Chan-wook's 'trilogy' !

Tommy don't expect the original to be amazing or anything, it's good but it's not Vertigo or Citizen Kane. Don't get caught up the hype bruv.

I think the original is a superb film. The performance from Min-sik Choi is worth it alone.

Does it matter?

It'll probably encourage more people to seek out the original.

One lone performance is not enough to make a film. It's good, but come on, it's not exactly five stars is it?

To many, myself included, it is. It's one of my five favorite films of all time. I think it's a masterpiece.

It's utterly brilliant and well worth five stars.

The slick style, the disturbing imagery, the tragedy and aimlessness of revenge personified, it's tense and terrifying. The performances are superb and the craftsmanship impeccable.

I'll be watching the remake on Tuesday, so I'll decide then if it's worthwhile, from the sounds of it, the cultural change hinders the film more than provides a new spin on it, and any changes are really for changes sake. I'll try and judge it as it's own film but chances are only a small percentage of people would be interested in Oldboy yet not want to watch the original.

You need to see more films.

No, my friend. Bad example. Castaway is a forgettable film in which Tom Hanks' performance screamed 'gimme an oscar!'. The production design that conveyed the isolated environments were the highlight for me.

Fair enough, I suppose. I get that it's SUPPOSED to be tragic, but the film seems to rely upon shocking violent scene/revelation after the other. It does have a good mood, I do think that there are better and more interesting vengeance themed films that don't resort to these gimmicks.
