It really depends on the show. In some cases (e.g. Twin Peaks), there is a huge improvement over the DVDs, in others not so much (e.g. I found Veronica Mars somewhat disappointing). I have neither Alias nor Smallville, so I can't say anything about those. Perhaps you could simply buy a single episode for a few bucks and see for yourself.

Going from an SD TV Show on DVD to SD on iTunes isn't much of an improvement, and sometimes even a bit lower quality. But for me, not enough that bothers me. If it's not HD, then it's about the same to me anyway. However, going from an SD TV Show on DVD to iTunes HD I've always seen to be a huge improvement. For example, Law & Order SVU, Season 1 on DVD is good, but in 1080p in iTunes is great.
