I agree! I can understand while watching a Blu-ray, I assume it needs a fair bit of processing power to handle a 1080P image and 24/25/30 fps with uncompressed sound and whatnot.
However, I've recently been watching my Dr Who dvds back to back to back to back to back to... you get the jist. Thing is, whilst watching standard DVDs the downloads still don't continue. To my knowledge they do download if you're playing a game (say Motorstorm) offline, however, the moment you go online, the downloads stop. Hence when I'm busy pwning noobs on Warhawk my downloads take a back seat. My PS3 replaced my HTPC overnight and I rely on it heavily as a jukebox, photo viewer thing, basic internet (when I can be arsed), DVD and Blu-ray player and of course, games. Downloading files whilst watching a DVD has been on my wishlist for ages now, in fact I was going to post a comment like this on here today anyways because I was thinking about it last night, someone beat me to it. D'oh! Maybe version 2.011928725987234234879 will address it |

The download is cutted right now because when the PS3 enter Playback mode (DVD or Blu-Ray) it completly wipe de XMB from the memory to load the software player. the XMB need to still be loaded to allow download (Somehow).
I'am pretty sure Sony will do it along the way.. |

It's what I need, but it's not what I can afford! Some of us in the UK are still on 1mb connections. I'm on Virginmedia's 4mb connection (through their fibre optic lines) and recently it's been seriously S-L-O-W. We have 3 PCs and 1 PS3 on our home network, but usually only the PS3 is on. I notice it runs a little faster if it's connected directly. To be honets 4mb seems no faster than 1mb, yet I'm paying more for it.
There was a report recently in the UK on the radio saying most broadband providers aren't hitting anywhere near the speeds they claim. Even taking into account ADSL substation distances and all that crap, they're just out to make money. My Christmas list: Want: From: 24mb broadband Anybody with lotsa spare money |

Well... downloads still work whilst playing offline games, and games don't have the XMB yet either. The games are going to make more use of the RAM than the DVD player, so it must be possible.
If I were designing the PS3, I'd have put at least a gig of RAM in it. Then again, the cost... but then again... the benefits. |

I'll trade you. I live in rural Minnesota and the fastest thing I can get is a wireless Sprint Broadband card and I'm in the area that can get 256K tops and it costs me 50 bucks a month. Otherwise, it's 56K dialup with not other options.

I have noticed that there is a new feature in the PSN store that allows you to start watching a movie AS you are downloading it (well, trailers and such). Sure it says you can start watching it right away but in reality, you might have to wait a little before you start it cause the playback will catch up to the download speed and pause the video while you wait for more to download. But it is actually pretty cool.
I am sure they can make it continue to download while a BD/DVD is running. They might with a future upgrade. |

They are complaining that if you download a large file, as soon as you start a disc (be it a BD, DVD, or PS3), it will stop the download and put it on pause until you are done with the movie or game.

I shall try Spiderman 3 myself.
I found out why my broadband doesn't seem like 4meg... its because its not. Virgin Media lowered it to 2meg without telling me. They upped it to 4meg at no extra charge for a while because they fudged up my account... now the freebie offer is over they lowered it. I was to understand when the freebie period ended I would pay the higher rate. So for months I've been complaining about slower broadband and thats why. GRRRRRRR! |
