47 Ronin Story from link above: The outcast Kai (Reeves), illegitimate son of a British sailor and a Japanese peasant woman, joins a group of Ronin, led by Kuranosuke Oishi (Sanada), who seeks vengeance on Lord Kira (Asano), a ruthless man who killed their master and banished the group. The Ronin embark on a journey with challenges that would defeat most warriors.

Thanks for posting the thread.

47 Ronin has a lot of competition in theaters now, most theaters with a full slate of movies to show, reducing showtimes no doubt. This one was originally delayed about a year to add extra scenes and 3D it's reported.

I hope 47 Ronin is entertaining with consistent medium 3D at the very least. Will find out soon. First time I'll be seeing Keanu Reeves in a theatrical movie since the Matrix Revolultions in 2003. Actually it was Constantine. Saw Day the Earth Stood Still on video.

47 Ronin cost 225$ million it's said. That is a major budget to earn back if it's true.

Im going to see this hopefully soon but it doesnt have many showtimes at my theater. Most movies have 10+ showtimes. This has 5. 3 2D shows and 2 3D

I noticed that also. Too many movies all at one time to see in theaters right now.

I am glad they went the extra mile and made this a 3D movie. We'll see if the 3D holds up. 47 Ronin looks promising for the action and scenery.

The 3D looked minimal in the trailer and I've read in reviews that the 3D is nothing special. The movie isn't supposed to be the greatest either. It is visually stunning though. I'll go and see it today and form my own opinion. I usually like movies that critics and popular media pan and the vice versa also holds true. Popular movies like Gravity I thought was meh. The media spoke of it like it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. It bored me and the 3D was average.

Edit: Also why did The Conjuring make so much damn money? I mean, I thought it was alright but seriously??? Yet another example of something mega overhyped and over consumed. I wouldn't bother getting it on blu ray. *gets off soap box*.

Yeah, other than the interior shots which had stronger 3D, most of Gravity had medium 3D with some mild 3D in there also.

RONIN 47: Enjoyed the movie despite the slow pacing, limited acting, and lack of more action, but felt the characters and story were well done. Ends on a sad note I'd say.
The action that is in 47 Ronin with Keanu Reeves is good with a few nice sword fighting scenes, 4 CGI monsters/humanoids and Keanu Reeves does a nice job fighting as I would hope, though his line delivery as usual could use less rigidity and be more natural as he offered in Speed, even though this character is more stoic and reserved. He plays an outcast here.
Enjoyed the movie but not sure if I'd rush out to buy it on blu ray 3D because the 3D didn't push it.

3D Review of 47 Ronin: As suggested above, medium 3D at the very best, with a good number of mild 3D shots throughout the movie but also some very nice medium 3D layering here and there. Nothing special about the 3D sadly, but it's decent. For conversions, Pacific Rim's stronger 3D destroys the 3D in 47 Ronin, for comparison. Didn't notice a single conversion error but that's not too difficult to accomplish with mild to medium 3D.

The 3d in Gravity was subpar? Is that correct?

47 Ronin was filmed in 3D? Interesting. I thought it was converted, but no big deal. If it was filmed, they really need to recalibrate the 3D cameras from stronger 3D in every shot.

I don't think so. A good amount of medium 3D in Gravity 3D, which is very good. They could have pushed it a bit more for stronger 3D, but in outerspace, they have to be careful about high contrasts creating a ghosting effect with current 3D glasses tech being unable to block out all light.

Considering how much studio interference and troubles the production had I gotta say I really liked it the fantasy element was really fun and at times inventive and the 3d was quite beautiful I thought. I thought the 3d depth was very consistent for the most part with plenty of depth, even if there were moments here and there where it looked like the stereographer forgot to turn up the parallax on the 3d rigs lol. Other than that though I was very pleased and it seriously has one of the best pop-outs I've seen during the Pirate cove sequence where the ball and chain thwacks the viewer (I jumped back hard and it really felt like I got hit at first lol).

Hopefully the movie gets a following home anyway. I think the movie would've done much better at the box office if it had been released in the summer. Waaaaaay too much competition at Christmas

You're right about the competition during Christmas time. Release it from February to late April at the latest. Or October to November would have been better.

I can't figure out why 47 Ronin cost $225 million to make other than the delays extending the budget? Any guesses? I agree, the characters made the story enjoyable.

RoboCop 2014 cost around $70 million, I Frankenstein around that, and Legend of Hercules $70 million or so.

I think it was a mistake to have the pirate cove be such a small sequence in the movie. The design work there was absolutely fantastic. Loved the creature Keanu was fighting there too. Would have loved a bit more of that.

The inflated budget had to be because the movie had been shot in 2010 I think and it kept having it's Christmas release pushed back for 3 years. That and I think the director pretty much got sidelined by the studio when they hired a different guy to direct during reshoots.

I saw 47 Ronin today. Overall, I liked the movie. It kept my interest the entire time. It's more a story driven movie with some action elements. The trailer, I feel, misconstrued the film to be a no-holes-barred martial arts action flick. The 3D was subtle most of the time with occasional medium 3D shots. I'll be picking this one up when it comes out on 3D Blu-ray.

Edit: BTW, I saw the 3D trailer for Pompeii and good lord, the 3D looks amazing. I hope the trailer is representative of the final product because the 3D looks like some of the best I've ever seen.

Finally watched this tonight and enjoyed it.

Really impressive 3D. Great depth from beginning to end and nice touches of smoke, bugs and debris flying around.

I love this movie, it's a great fantasy adventure with some wonderful design work. The 3D comes across nicely as well.

I just watched this again with some friends. BTW they loved it! I do have a concern about this and other movies I have noticed with the same problem. The sound! Turned up to 100% and the volume is still so low it was hard for my guest to hear some parts of the movie. Can someone tell why this is? I feel there is no excuse for this. It is very annoying.

I just saw it for the first time this weekend and agree that it was a good popcorn flick! I also agree that it seemed that sometimes the dialogue level was very low compared to the level of music. I've noticed this on several other movies lately.

This was one of the first I saw in 3D (HBO Demand) before getting a Blu-ray player. First saw it flat then saw 3D was available for free on cable. What a difference for one just starting out, even though it wasn't Blu-ray quality.

It is a very touching story indeed with wonderful 3D. Of course,it's now part of my collection.

I really wish some of the trailer shots had been in the finished movie. There's some cool scenery shots they cut out. They also deleted a scene at the pirate town that's pretty cool and puts Keanu's slavery there into better context. It really felt like a much longer movie that had been trimmed down considerably. That said I really love the movie and I must've watched it about 10 times by now. It always holds up and I always enjoy it. Lots of great design work throughout.

That big heavy in the armour needed a big fight with Keanu at the end though. He's built up as a major physical antagonist, only to go out in a quick explosion. Very disappointing end for a visually cool villain.
