SCI FI Predictions???

I always see stories about sci-fi movies predicting things like flying cars decades ago, and the world not having them yet...... So, I thought it might be fun to try to predict the future.

What science fiction is most likely to come true in the near future and why?


My prediction would be Gattaca. When we went to the doctor and were having our daughter 2 years ago, I was amazed (and a bit frightened) by how close the notion of designer children was. Also, recently, I have seen prejudice against people being hired for jobs because of weight/appearance/smokers --- basically, the hiring managers thinking these things = bad health, which will up their health insurance costs - so they won't hire someone.

I could also maybe see terminator. While the actual robots maybe not - how far are we from a skynet? Every day, it seams like more national defense is handled by computers. Also, look at the increase in automated policing. Traffic cams are now common all over the place. How long before a computer is designed to monitor all those cams and dispense tickets/etc..... and keep track of that kind of information at a country wide level. How long before control is handed over to a computer because it is cheaper/more efficient?

What do you think is close to coming true from the sci-fi world?

I think movies like Minority Report and I Robot are probably very accurate. Not in the main areas of robots or pre-crime, but in the rest of the little things they did to create the worlds.

I find myself also wondering how close we are to some of the stuff from Star Trek.

I know we are close to tricorders with stuff like the scanadu:

I have seen some articles on the experiments we are currently doing with Warp Bubbles:

But I don't think Warp Bubbles will work from a practicality standpoint. I think the theory is sound, but what happens when you are traveling in a Warp Bubble and the Bubble comes in contact with matter out in space. It should work fine moving through a void --- but space isn't completely a void (there are dust particles, asteroids, planets, etc.....).

Gattaca for genetic engineering

Minority Report - for technology (invasive/personalized advertising, touchscreen everything), and transportation (bigger safer cars, more autonomous driving)

IRobot, The Animatrix (The Second Renaissance) , A.I., etc..- Increasingly self-aware robotics that will become a bigger and bigger part of our everyday lives, for better or worse

Wall-E - Society is extremely attached to their computer/Internet to the point of ignoring mostly everything else. Possibly the whole space city ship thing too, but much further into the future.

2001 A Space Odyssey was released in 1968. It predicted many things including iPad style tablets over 40 years before they came into existence.

Agree with Gattaca being a possiblity in the future. At least with being able to remove harmful genes and eliminating certain genetic disorders. The designer children opens up a whole can of worms, though, so I am not sure how that will play out.

Star Trek also had tablets and video chat.

A.I., The Matrix, I,Robot, and Terminator all have artificial intelligence in machines as a threat and I see it more and more from the military to our own household devices. Military drones for example. It makes no sense to me at all to allow a machine to make a decision for anything. Man should always have control and the final say. Not to mention, machines will only further take away jobs from people as they have already.
One thing stands true for me, I will never allow a robot to have the same rights and privileges as a human. It offends me in movies to give equal rights to a machine that looks like a boy or man (Bicentennial Man). Making a machine that looks and acts human is just disgusting. It has no more right to life than a toaster.
I also hate it in movies when they try to make me feel something for it. A machine is not worthy of our emotions. If a robot were torn limb from limb, we shouldn't feel any more for it than for any other machine that gets tossed in the garbage. Artificial intelligence is a huge mistake that people are striving to make. As Jeff Goldblum said in Jurrassic Park, "they were so busy thinking about if they could, they never stopped to think if they should".

Wouldn't be surprised to see a variation of Westworld in the distant future. They're building better, and better, robots with each passing year. I think Japan's going to be the first to build something like that. They say, "Life imitates art," and it's evident if you stop and look around. Digital billboards were in Blade Runner first, weren't they (correct me if I'm wrong)? Now I see them everywhere.

When I got my first iPad, I wondered whether to get one of those little "book" attachable-keyboard case-covers for it--
And playing around with a keyboard-cased Mini in the store, I realized...."I'm using the same disguised 'book' communicator/computer Inspector Gadget's sidekick Penny used to carry around! "

I'm not too sure how far away it may be but in Strange Days they have a neural interface headset recorder/replay device. While may or may not happen for quite some time,It would be cool for so many aspects. Imagine doing an extreme sport without the physical danger (skydiving,bungee jumping,skiing,etc.)
