Default Smart move for sony

http://www.ps3land.com/article-582.php

The above link talks about how Gamestop wants to make sure that everyone that preorders a ps3 gets one. Apparently with the xobx 360, most people did preorder one, but not enough consoles were made to supply the preorders, hence a console shortage. Many have claimed that Sony may fall into the same situtation, but I think otherwise because a console shortage would look bad for sony. Anyway, if I find anything else new about the ps3, I will be sure to post the link.

Sony will definitely not have enough PS3's available at launch. Many who preorder are unlikely to receive a unit on day one. I don't need anything more than common sense to predict this occurence.

Personally I hope they DO use a high deposit and home address or credit card system to lower the chances of ebay sales.

The situation with Xbox360 last year was ridiculous.

Sony should create an online preorder system that shops can use, so you preorder through your local shop, but the order itself is dealt with by Sony, allowing them to be sure that it's one PS3 for each household.

And frankly, if a household wants more than one at launch, then tough. They can wait for more consoles to come in.

Be prepared to camp outside of your local retailer... These things are going to be hot.

I agree with you about what you're saying. IGN has said that Sony would allow for preorders way before the actual launch day so that everyone can avoid a line 5 miles long outside of their retailer.

From Gamesindustry.biz today: production has not yet begun on PS3, but Sony are happy that all is on track for 2 million units at launch.

We should be able to officially pre-order from September sometime.

I'm just trying to imagine the logistics. Frankly, I can't believe they haven't even started production on these yet.

And they really are going to have 2 million units ready to go in less than 3 months from this writing?

Honestly: Does anyone have any doubt in their minds that we're going to see at least a repeat of the same kind of shortages that plagued the Xbox360, if not worse?

Remember: This is going to be the first time ever simulteanous worldwide launch of a game console. Ever.

I'll salute Sony if they pull it off, but that's a tall order to say the least.

There were plenty of reports to suggest that production had actually started, but Sony appear to be denying this.

It's now completely simultaneous, the launch window covers a week or two doesn't it?

Will they do it? We'll see. There will be shortages, I just hope I can get my name down in time to guarantee one for launch.

<snip>
There was a press release by one of the manufacturers of the PS3 in mid July that they had started production of the PS3. Other reports in the following week stated that production had actually started 1 July, but the company was waiting until production start up wrinkles and glitches were out of the way before announcing production was under way.

Without specific information and quotations directly from Sony officers to the contrary I tend to believe a company that issues a press release that says "I'm actually building them now!"

September will have to be the day for Sony to start mass production. I've heard rumors that mass production had already begun, but no sony representative could commit about it. I wonder what the hold up is. Sony is in an odd spot right now. If they can pull themselves out of this one, I'll be surprised. My bet is that Sony will do something that Microsoft didn't do to avoid a console shortage.

The above link is for an article that talks about the ps3. Apparently, production hasn't started yet. The case being that Sony hasn't decided on a specific number of consoles that each teritory will get.

The link does not seem to go outside the forum itself and the specific thread it links to does not give any link to an outside article either.
