I am curious about the perceptions of generations younger than myself when it comes to BD title releases that I saw in the theater as a kid and teenager. For example. The release of 2001 on BD. I did not see it at it's opening in 1968, but did see it through cinema releases in the 70's. Close Encounters I saw in the theater in 1977 when I was 17 years old. These are just an example of two very high quality films being released at the moment and I wanted to know if younger generations are able to appreciate older movies that they did not grow up on. Or is excellent film making recognized by any generation?

Like you, I grew up in the 60's & 70's. I can throw back to that era and call out a number of hallmark milestones of movies and music and culture that really defined a generation. Anything beyond mid-1980's just seems so blah. It's just the same rehashed corporate sputum regurgetated over and over again.
The only sound I get of the current generation is... CLICK....CLICK...CLICK.... I'm curious too. People in the 18-30 crowd...what do you see as the legacy of your generation that we'll look back on as hallmarks of culture and entertainment? (Rap? Grunge Rock? Pixar?) It's funny you should ask this. I was at a charity over the weekend in San Diego, and there were a lot of volunteers in the high school/college age range. I have the Close Encounters "5 note" theme as a ring tone for my phone. Not a single person in the high school/college demographic knew what it was whenever my phone rang. In fact they always looked around in wonder, and I remember one of them asking out loud "what's with that trumpet?"
Anyway, as for me, I was 7 when Close Encounters came out, but I didn't see it until my teens in the mid 80's when we got got our first VCR, the same goes for 2001. I may not be quite the younger age group you're looking for, but I loved both of those films and will get them in blu. But as for other classics or what I think was excellent film making before my generation, Citizen Kane, Casablanca, and I hate to admit - The Sound of Music - are at the top of my list. yeah, it's not that I don't appreciate them, they just dont hold sentiment in my heart as they do you. I actually really like 2001 and clockwork orange because my dad made me watch 2001 when i was a kid and my weird friends make me watch cult movies. But movies like halloween on BD I have no desire to see/buy. I'll blame modern day society and CGI

Hmmm. This is deep.
I'll have to answer this when I have more time. Right now, the only thing deep on my mind is sleep ![]() |

Yeah, I know the sentiments...it's 2:19 AM here and the Sandman is calling. I will chime in on this one. I saw CE3K when I was around five and I saw 2001 about the same time. At this age, neither of them really made much difference as I really didn't understand them. It took my teens to actually see them as masterpieces of cinema. They are still excellent movies that evolved into the sci-fi genre as we have it today.

This is something I frequently contemplate and ask myself "what went wrong"? Something like a decades worth of reality TV shows just tells you the enterainment industry went to sleep and gave up on itself. This is truely apathetic. I actually feel sorry for young people today...I'm not really sure what the glue is that holds them together. ![]() ![]() |

My all time favorite is watching someone trying to drive while holding a cell phone in one hand and a beverage in the other hand. As they are going down the highway, they are drinking and looking down at the phone trying to text. So, I'm praying that either they will wind up as a contestant in the Darwin Awards or those Smart Cars will hurry and be mass produced.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind is fantastic. I saw it for the first time when it was first released on DVD.
2001 A Space Odyssey is weird for me. Watching the film I realize why it is considered a cinematic masterpiece and I realize how extraordinary it was for its time. I imagine if I had watched it at a theater during its initial release my jaw would have been on the floor. That said it is just so slow so it is very difficult for me to make it through the entire movie in one sitting. I'm not proud of this but I'm being honest. ![]() Oh and I'm 28. |

Will have to figure that one out without me, friend. It's time this country boy got his butt in bed. Will look it up tomorrow. I think there are at least three that have more than I do...I guess we will see. And after the BOGOs this week, there may be a few more.

My perception (say, pass the Metamucil there, will ya, Abner?) is that the Old Generation who knew about these films all along is hoping to "avenge" a generation of cheap sitcom gags::
Particularly with the saturation of Simpsons, Shrek and CN-stoner humor, and its current pop-culture obsessed with pointlessly or robotically parroting old 70's-iconic movie gags because, well, you're supposed to, we have a generation that can joke about any line from 2001 but has never actually sat down and watched it. Okay, PS3'ers: Now you've gotten your first wicked-kewl excuse to sit down and watch 2001, in the same manner as the first generation saw it in a theater, or possibly even better. Now you know have some actual context to attach to why bones were turning into spaceships with Strauss waltzes on the soundtrack, and now you know why HAL was sorry he couldn't open the pod bay doors...Ain't it cool? ![]() (No, not the movie--Actually knowing something you didn't know before. And the more "parents'" movies that come out...The more that you can learn.) |

well im 25 years old and I love older movies. They are so much better than todays movies. I thought 2001, shining, full metal (pretty much all of kubric's movies) are amazing, I loved Dog day afternoon, Taxi Driver is one of my favorite movies, Big fan of Scarface, Carlito's Way, one flew over the cuckoos nest and so on. Id say the biggest movie (aka most influential) imo of my generation would proberly have to be pulp fiction (big fan of qt movies) I also love the coen bro's movies like fargo and barton fink and the big lebowski is my all time favorite movie. Thats the one movie that nearly swayed me to the red side (not some stupid transformers movie) but I stayed tru blu and once universal go blu thats a day one purchase.

Yea Barton Fink would be good to see in Blu. I guess I like movies that leaves room for the viewer to interpret it in his/hers own way. I love the way the hotel seems to take a life of its own and almost becomes a character in its own right (those who have seen Barton Fink know what im talking about) Also a special mention to Steve Buscemi even though he only had a very small role in the movie he is one of my favorite actors.

(And these are things you learn by watching movies made before 1985 on Turner Classic Movies, as the Coens apparently believe they are the only people in North America to have ever done.) ![]() |
