Germany African Safari (2013) Blu-ray 3D [Region Locked] [Ben Stassen]

With all of the nature docs coming out in Germany, I nearly missed this - -- - - - nWave's "African Safari 3D" is being released by Studio Canal in Germany next month - - - - directed by Ben Stassen of Sammy's Adventures (aka Turtle's Tale).

Arrow 3D Safari Africa or African Safari 3D:

I haven't seen NWave's feature yet, African Safari 3D, though I did a search and since the titles are so similar, felt posting a small review on the rival title would be appropriate here rather than create another thread with a similar title.

On amazon.com, this was selling brand new for $5:

3D Safari Africa with the Narrator guide, Hunter Ellis.

If anyone likes the nature documentaries from Nature, National Geographic, etc, this one is 1 hour and 26 minutes worth of generally strong 3D and a great range of wild Lions, Cheetahs and 6 kittens/cubs, Rhinos, Hippos, Crocodiles, Gazelles, Flamingos, hyenas, Water Buffalo, Elephants, Giraffes, Chimps, Baboons, you name it. Really enjoyed the documentary and the host was entertaining and informative.

It's pretty much like going on a Tour of the African Wild from the safety of your home, with the host as your guide, without the hassle of booking a trip and getting bit by the biting flies out there, that's how great the 3D is in many instances.

The 3D crew was clearly going for strong 3D here along the lines of Imax, though for many of the distance shots, when you zoom in out in the wild, you lose the 3D effect while zooming because of the distance, so there are a number of panoramic 3D shots that are pretty much 2D because of the distance, which is understandable.

3D in 3D Safari Africa (by WildEyes and Level 33): 8/10. Many strong 3D shots, with a mix of medium and mild 3D shots based on the situation of filming the animal in the wild and the distance of the animal from the 3D camera rig. If they could find a way to make the distance shots stronger, I'd give it a 10/10 for 3D layering. There are pretty much zero pop outs, aside from the flies hovering around the animals and their feast.

For $5 bucks, awesome deal with great 3D in 3D Safari Africa. The cover art is not very engaging with the animals spaced on the map evenly in the background with the host on the left side. Weak cover art is actually what made me hold off on this title till at $5, I couldn't resist giving it a try.

Hunter Ellis? I remember that name from a previous 3D Africa wildlife movie that wasn't that good. Has he done something previous to this?

That was probably the only one I know him to have been in. The photography of the animals was really well done and showed some great moments captured of the animals in their natural world, sorry to hear you didn't like it.

Looking back, I now blame my experience on the lack of brightness on my Samsung PDP. I'm going to check the movie out again on a 4k set.

Thumbs up

You're right about the brightness making a big difference.
As I mentioned, there are some flat shots in there, but the shots that are in 3D for a lot of the animals are strong 3D shots, making up for the inconsistency of 3D to some degree.

African Safari 3D (from Ben Stassen, the maker of Sammy's Adventures movies) is coming out on 3D Blu-ray soon in the UK. So excited about this title, Ben Stassen is a 3D master and I can't wait to see what he can do with live action. And his other animated film, House of Magic 3D is coming out soon too, with fantastic 3D as well.

Anyone else is thinking of getting African Safari 3D??

In the UK it's on October 20th. I would be keen to see this due to Ben Stassen's involvement and being a big animal lover however i must really wait for a price drop.

I have seen this now and while it is no David Attenborough documentary it is still good. But the 3D is amazing, extremely strong throughout with amazing depth and pop outs on a par with the Sammy movies! They used a specially designed handheld 3D camera to get as close to the animals as possible so you get close up shots of elephants for instance with their trumps getting close to your nose. They also used a hot air balloon for many sequences with seats for 2 passengers resulting in amazing overhead shots with the guys half way in your living room. All in all it is the most extreme 3D title I have seen apart from IMAX documentaries and the Sammy movies. Highly recommended!!

Finally gave in and ordered the Region A Japanese import of African Safari 3D.
If it's anywhere as good as Enchanted Kingdom, it'll be worth the $40 price.

Amazon.jp

i used the link on this site to open up their page in English.
I can't seem to link it with the phone I'm on.
Do an "all countries" search for African Safari 3D at the top of the page and choose the Japanese one and you'll be good to go!!!

Mine already shipped and should be here by Monday.

Looking forward to your review. Stassen's 3D team is one of the best out there.
