Default 'Anti-Claus' - Kevin Smith's Christmas horror Anthology

Quote:
When you sit around and talk with your friends for hours on end, some crazy stories are bound to come out. And if you’re Kevin Smith, you turn those stories into screenplays. That’s how his next movie, Tusk, came about, and the origin of a potential musical project called Helena Handbag. Now a third story has been turned into a screenplay. Described as a Smodcast version of Creepshow, with a holiday theme, it’s called Comes The Krampus and was co-written by Smith and Andy McElfresh. Smith, along with Jason Mewes, Jennifer Schwalbach and others will each direct a segment of the anthology holiday horror film over the summer, after Smith finishes Clerks 3. Read more below.

Smith announced the project on his blog. Here’s the post.

Quote:
If you listen to the EDUMACATION podcast, you’ll remember that episode 20 (Part 2 of the Christmas eps) consisted of another dopey conversation that resulted in a screenplay – a’la SModcast and TUSK. I was goofing around with Mr. Edumacation himself, Professor Andy McElfresh, when we accidentally brainstormed a Christmas horror anthology that would eschew the gruesome spin on Santa Claus, and instead embrace the Scandinavian/German Kid-Eating Christmas creature known as the The Krampus. That podcast was released 12/23/13.

It took us less than a month, but Andy and I have finished the screenplay for a flick we’re calling COMES THE KRAMPUS! It’s 99 pulse-pounding pages of what’s essentially SModCo’s CREEPSHOW, with four terrifying tales stitched together by a freaky framing device. It was a blast to write and totally new to me, as I never actually wrote a screenplay WITH someone else before.

And now, to extend the spirit of collaboration even further, I’M GONNA CO-DIRECT THE FLICK WITH THE SMODCO FAMILY! Andy McElfresh will direct the “The Krampus vs. The 3rd Grade” episode (SO ****ed up), Jason Mewes (yes – THAT Jason Mewes) will direct the “Hitler’s Krampus” episode (twisted period piece), I will direct the “Mask Maker” episode (the Gothic horror piece), Carol Banker will direct the “The Proposal” episode (which is ****ing nuts), and Jennifer Schwalbach will direct “The Bad Babysitter” – which is the framing device that holds the whole mess together. Jordan Monsanto will produce for SModcast Pictures and the twin SModCo cherries on the top of this scary sundae? I’m gonna force my Bro Scotty Mo(sier) to act in it and Babble-Meister RALPH GARMAN will feature in every episode!

The script reads like it’s maybe a $2 million movie. We’ll start doing a schedule and a budget next week, but the idea is to shoot it right on the heels of CLERKS III (which I’m hoping to start on April 7th). It’s gonna be fun and a true SModcast Picture! There’s something to be said for the power of podcasting…
You can listen to the full podcast at this link.

I love this idea, and love the idea Smith is using his daily musings to create other media. Will this film ever see the light of day? We’ll have to wait and see. But the more ideas Smith gets out there, the more likely we are to see some new and exciting projects.

I was going to say, "He's gotten WEIRD since they kicked him off that airplane... ", but yes, that's a good theory, too.

(I like it when he pulls out one of his weirdest, most unmarketably unexplainable idiosyncratic pet projects RIGHT as the news is playing up some states' "success" with new legalization laws.
If he doesn't end up with a Cartoon Network deal by this time two years from now, he's just not trying hard enough.)

Yes. Get the Clerks Series back on the damn air!!! Or how about an Askewniverse Tales series, with a Brodie episode, a Holden episode, a Bartleby and Loki episode (prequel episode?), as well as Clerks episodes.

Sounds pretty freaking cool. Already looking forward to Tusk.
2014-2016 looks to be quite big for him.
-Tusk (Fall 2014)
-Clerks III (Fall 2014?)
-Comes the Krampus (Christmas 2015?)
-Helena Handbag (?)

It'll be interesting to see how Jason Mewes and his wife handle directing their own segments.

Kevin Smith Updates on 'Clerks III' and 'Comes the Krampus' During AMA:

Quote:
I like the idea of growing old with Dante and Randal, and stopping into from time to time to check on them. Love working with Brian O'Halloran and Jeff Anderson, but Dante and Randal are my boys. They lifted me up to where I am today, that pair of fictional clerks. So I like to honor them by not letting them be forgotten. And checking in on them for CLERKS III will be that.
But on the subject of CLERKS III, recently, I've had a big come-to-Jesus conversation with myself about my immediate future.

Last year, I turned a podcast into the best movie I've ever made. We call it TUSK: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/new...ks-tusk-639293

This was fun and crazy creative. But more importantly? It had the benefit of never having been tried before: the first movie based on a podcast. Shit like that tickles the shit out of me: I like being first through the door. It was bold, in a not-really-bold-compared-to-folks-who-serve-in-the-armed-forces kinda way. It was me taking nearly 7 years of podcasting and saying "Hey - some of these might actually work as movies..."

So now that TUSK is nearly done (we still have our Guy Lapointe scenes to shoot this month), the idea was to gear up for CLERKS III. But then I started thinking "Isn't that stepping backwards? Like literally?" While I love it with all of my heart, CLERKS is my past. It's how I got started. And I'm just getting started again, after taking 3 years off, certain I was done making movies. TUSK represents something bold and new. No matter how bold I make it, CLERKS III will always have a number in the title. It will never be new. It will rock, I assure you, and it will be a worthy final installment in my mini-mart magnum opus. But it's predicated on something I did a long time ago. I wanna keep moving forward. SModcast Pictures is becoming exactly that: we're starting to make movies based on podcasts. TUSK was the first, and now COMES THE KRAMPUS will be next: http://silentbobspeaks.com/?p=1075
Now, at this point in time, nobody but me can make a CLERKS film. But ANYONE can make a Krampus picture. So before anyone else does, I figured it's time to keep moving forward: we're gonna shoot COMES THE KRAMPUS in April, before CLERKS III.

We've got a 20 day schedule and an under-3 million budget, and lots of folks returning from TUSK as well as other flicks I've done. Gonna be a SModCo CREEPSHOW, set at Christmas. And if we stay on schedule, by the time we start, it will have been only 4 months since the initial conversational whimsy about it on the EDUMACATION podcast, right before Christmas. That's a real fuel to my fire now: taking weird ideas from podcast to film as quickly as possible, before anyone realizes they're dumb ideas and they have time to fall apart.

CLERKS III is still coming. I love the script so much, I'll make it happen, I promise. But the muse (and the Mewes) is pulling me away from something old for the moment and pulling me toward something new. And when the muse whispers, I listen. When the Mewes whispers, it's just kinda creepy. And he spells shit wrong - even though he's just whispering and not writing.

Default Anti-Claus (Kevin Smith)

Sounds cool!

Looks like Kevin Smith is staying in horror-ville with Anti-Claus. He just wrapped up Tusk and is grafting the stars from that film – Justin Long, Haley Joel Osment, Genesis Rodriguez and Michael Parks – onto this one.

Always down for new Smith material. Horror anthologies are very underappercaited anymore it seems (that's if he still plans to do it that way).

I am curious about this. I seem to be one of the few that loved Red State. My biggest hesitance is that Smith isn't fully directing it. I really don't know about Mewes or his wife directing. That gives me pause.

This sounds kinda dumb now but then again Yoga Hosers would have been better as a short films so you never know. I thought Smith's segment in Holidays was one of the worst though and I use to be a HUGE Smith nerd

I enjoy his earlier work, but is Kevin Smith even relevant anymore? His last studio film was Cop Out and you all know how that turned out, but then the three indie movies since then where he had total control weren't exactly good.

Cop out is not a Kevin Smith movie. And you could say the same thing for almost any big director these days but isn't relevant to any discussion.
