Today I received a copy of Paramount Japan's release of Jack Reacher (2012). This was one of my favorite films in 2012, so I wanted to see if Paramount Japan (who normally do their own encodes) did anything differently than Paramount in the US, Europe, or other parts of Asia.

The short answer is: They do not.

This is the exact same video encode (bit- for-bit) as the US and Central / Eastern European discs. Exactly why the Western European BD has a (very) slightly lower video bitrate is unknown, but it hardly matters.

The main audio track is bit-for-bit identical to every other encode, which is more good news.

This disc is also region-free, like it's counterparts worldwide, and contains the same extra material for the film. There are no previews or trailers anywhere on the disc.

The copyright notice and menu are in Japanese only, however, this particular disc is relatively straightforward to navigate.

The main feature comes with optional English and Japanese subtitles, as well as a Japanese dub track in Dolby Digital 5.1. The main feature has English (non-SDH) and Japanese subtitles only.

Extras include the same two commentaries and three featurettes that comprise the US extras. The three featurettes have optional English and Japanese subtitles, while the audio commentaries have only Japanese subtitles. Those requiring English subtitles for the audio commentaries should seek one of the alternate editions.
