I'm a Three Colors: Red man, through and through, although I love all three of the movies dearly. Without revealing spoilers, I love how the third film brings the concept together. More importantly, I'm most intrigued by the plot of the third movie on its own terms.

Way back in the day when I first saw them, Blue was the only one that I immediately purchased on VHS. I intended to own them all eventually, but even when the DVDs came out, again I purchased Blue and left the others to wait (though I rented them to revisit them). It wasn't until the Criterion Blu-ray set came out that I finally owned the entire trilogy at last.
When I first received the Blu-ray set, Blue was the only one that I immediately viewed on Blu-ray. I intended to watch them all in a row, but the others were once again left to wait a while before their turn. Why? Quite simply, I like them all a great deal, but I connect with Blue on a much deeper level for some reason so I revisit it more frequently. Part of it is the score by the always great Zbigniew Preisner (I own the soundtrack on CD as well, but not for the other films), part of it is the quiet cold withdrawal portrayed so fantastically by Binoche, and part of it is simply in the film's beautifully austere aesthetic and pacing that accentuates Julie's internal struggles. I can definitely see people having a preference for either of the other two, but for me, Blue is definitely my favorite. |

My favorite is Red, though I think all three are excellent movies.
I first saw the movies about 10 and a half years ago when I was 14. I borrowed the VHS of Red from my local library. They didn't have Blue or White on the shelf that week. I watched Red and instantly loved it. I fell in love with Irene Jacob. And I found the central relationship of the film deeply moving and the metaphysical puzzle at its heart was unlike anything I'd seen. I watched it again before returning it. I was able to borrow Blue and White a few weeks later and I checked out Red again as well. I watched them all in an evening. At the time, I found Blue a bit pretentious and it didn't quite pull me in though I recognized Juliet Binoche gave a fantastic performance. I watched White and really liked it. I was a bit thrown since much of the US marketing material focused on Julie Delpy and seemed to paint the movie as a provocative thriller. Instead, the movie focuses on a male and it's more of a rather dark comedy. In the years since and as I've grown, I've come to appreciate Blue more. The Three Colors trilogy introduced me to Kieslowski and I went on to love The Double Life of Veronique and the Decalogue. I still haven't seen his earlier films. I guess I've been waiting for the Blu-rays but they don't seem to be on the horizon. ![]() |
