Question scfi TV shows normaily have a hard time making it past the 4 or 5 season?

Why do scfi TV shows normaily have a hard time making it past the 4 or 5 season? Even good scfi shows?

seasons 4 / episodes 75 Battlestar Galactica
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battles...2004_TV_series)

season 5 / episodes 100 Fringe
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Fringe_episodes

season 5 / episodes 100 Stargate Atlantis
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stargate_Atlantis

season 1 / episodes 14 Firefly
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firefly_(TV_series)

When you look shows like CSI ,NCIS ,Law and Order ,Bones ,Dallas (1978 TV series ,Survivor (U.S. TV series) ,NYPD Blue ,M*A*S*H ,Frasier so on.

Thay seem to not have problem making it to the 10 season and many times to 12 or 15 season or more.

Are scfi TV shows more costly to make ? Is that why? The fox network and sci fi network have been dumbing down shows and more into cheap reality shows and sports has of late.

I believe the ratings where much higher on those scfi shows I listed above than most reality shows but if it cost more to do scfi shows so they need higher ratings?

The 90's to 2005 was more year of scfi shows than after 2005 it was less shows and more cancellation.

I believe all the shows I listed above where cancelled because of low ratings or at least not high enough for the cost to make the show?

BSG had a planned story arc and length. It wasn't cancelled, it just ended the story.

As for Fringe and SGA, 5 years and 100 episodes is a very successful TV run. I never watched Fringe, but SGA got cancelled so they could focus on SGU, otherwise it may have lasted 10 years like SG1.

Firefly just didn't get the exposure it should have and with SyFy, unlike the major networks, they don't have the resources to give a show a second chance if it isn't almost immediately successful.

Also, you left Farscape off the list which is one of my all-time favorite Sci Fi shows and it got cancelled after 4 seasons when there was a plan for a 5th. At least it got a movie to wrap it up.

To be fair... most shows of any genre have a tough time getting past 4-5 seasons.

You're comparing shows that did make it to those that didn't in one particular genre.

Lots of dramas, comedies, cop shows, etc. etc. fail in their first or second years too.

Cost may be a factor in a sci-fi show getting the axe... but lots of comedies and dramas non sci-fi get the axe year after year.

That's because shows like NCIS and CSI have no story. It's mostly story of the week episodes with a little story taking place over the season.

Science fiction shows usually have a set story that can't go on forever. 100 episodes or 5 seasons is more than enough to start and end a story the proper way.

Scfi TV shows is more type of people not everyone..Where cop shows ,romance ,comedy and drama appeal to most everyone.

Scfi shows are also very costly to make and need very high rating.

Well reality TV are dirt cheap to make and can have very low ratings and make it past the 5 or 6 season.

Most TV these days are cheap reality TV .And no wonder why the cable companies and sci scfi channel wonder why the ratings are low these days.

In today's hostile climate of cheap reality TV that killed TV.Star trek or X files would never make it past the 4 season.

If you dumbed TV down enough with crappy cheap reality TV no wonder people have cut the cable and buy movies these days.

Most scfi these days have gone to movies ,both the X-files and star trek base.Even stargate sg1 and Atlantis.

I also think the 90's to 2006 we saturated the market with space base scfi shows and now the shift is to zombies ,vampires ,super heroe and super supernatural. Give it other 5 to 8 years and alien and space shows may make come back.

You may get spin of movies like alien box set with Ripley may be not her but some one like her, predators and x-files in 5 to 8 years after we saturated the market with zombies ,vampires ,super heroe and super supernatural. And alien and space shows may make come back.

The thing is, I like the other genres, especially the Superhero movies, next to Sci-fi, of course, but like you said, these things go in cycles.

But, for example, the Western and the Musical is still mostly dead to people nowadays.

Me personally I like shows that last like 5 seasons or so cause I'm not really a fan of shows lasting forever. For example falling skies is ending next season and that maybe due to viewership but I'm fine with that'd. 5 seasons is good enough for me.
