Default Blu players may drop by $100 soon

I was talking to tech from Panasonic yesterday and if he is right there is a plan to drop the price of Blu players (stand alone it sounds like) by $100 after thanksgiving. I thought at first he meant only Panasonic, but from his info (true or not who knows) other makers were planning the same. Good news if true and I was about to by the Panny 30 that just came out for $499, but I will wait another week or so to see.

Anyone here with any inside info on something like this happening?

Well Panasonic could make it happen all by themselves if they wanted to. Who's going to buy a 1.0 Sony/Sharp/Samsung deck when the 1.1 Panasonic (with apparently superior video quality?) is cheaper?

Panasonic did say a month or so ago that lower prices were coming...

You could always buy the panny now somewhere that does 30 day price guarantees (Best Buy for instance). Personally I'd still wait until around the 30th, so that you can match with boxing week sales

Those that will buy the other players are the ones that donot have 1.3 HDMI receivers. Since the Panasonic will not decode anything over DD+ and DTS.

I fall into that category and I would not pay a $100 premium for a -S300 for example over a Panny-30...

I don't mind waiting a few more weeks. I got 3 of the Panasonic DMP-BD10A's yesterday for $150 each with the free movies. I saw those while I was shopping for the Panny 30, but I still want the 30.

Actually, I think Sony should lower the price of the S300 to at least $300 if not $250. Compared to many other player especially the Panasonic BD30, Pioneer 95FD and even the Samsung BD-P1400, it is a pretty substandard player. To ask $500 for that one is a bit ridiculous.

Cant we get the S1 to drop or the BDP-1000 to drop?

These are still way over priced everywhere I go! Lets liquidate these at $200 a pop to get the 1.1 players out there!!

NO BLU RAY PLAYER SHOULD BE $100!

There is no way that this calendar year should see a $100 BD player. That is substandard bull shit that comes from the DUD side, not the superior tech side

I think this price drop has already happened. I live in Atlanta and we have a chain of electronics mega marts called BrandsMart USA. In today's paper they had their insert advert called "Why Wait for Black Friday Sale". They had the Samsung Blu Ray for $299 (after $100 in-store immediate rebate) with 8 free movies and all other Blu Ray players were $100 off regular store prices (not MSRP). I think that this store regularly charges $449 for the low end Sony Blu Ray so this would now be $349.

Well, the S1 and BD-P1000 should have been liquidated from everywhere already, but since the S300 is still sold at retail stores that's why I think its price should be permanently dropped to $300 or slightly below. It just doesn't compare to many superior $500 players that are out there now.

I didn't know Georgia had Brandsmart USA's. I thought it was only in Florida.

They have been up here about 5 years and have 3 stores now. If you know what you are buying they typically spank the prices offered by Best Buy, etc.

As someone leaning Blu Ray I am just happy to see a player going into the holiday season with a $2 in front of the price. I think if Blu Ray can hold its own through the holidays (even a 50-50 tie in hardware sales) it will be too late for an HD surge given the much larger install base of Blu Ray already and generally superior movie offerings.

Same at my local BJ's Wholesale club today. The Sony 301 is now only $347 after the instant $100 in-store rebate.

Yes, but it's only a temporary sale.

even though they say temporary, I dont know if I believe it. Once the prices drop, they may go back to full price for a bit, but I could easily see them dropping again. Once BD Player prices drop, its hard to convince a consumer to pay full price again on an identical player. It would be for me anyway

Why do think so many PS3 owners who got the original 60GB version are so pissed about the current price drops? I know I'd be.

That would be worse... much worse. Wasn't that a $200 price drop in a span of like 2 months instead of a $100 price drop in 8 months?

I'm perfectly happy with mine... I get full PS2 compatability and I didn't pay a premium for 20GB of hard drive space and a crappy game I would never play anyway.

The only thing that would really piss me off would be a sub-$200 BD 1.1 standalone player before January. But I could take solace in the fact that it's good for Blu-ray
