Default John Carpenter's The Thing...The Perfect Horror Movie?

Just thinking about this movie I get excited. It's one of the few films that I can watch probably weekly and still be highly entertained. It's a perfect execution in suspense as only Carpenter can provide. Even though it failed miserably to E.T. at the box office, it just couldn't be ignored and has become not only a cult classic, but one of the greatest horror films of all time.

Profess you love for The Thing now!

I think it's a pretty decent horror film, although I'm not the biggest fan.

I will admit that the electrical spark scene scared the crap out of me. I was, but wasn't expecting it.

Pretty much agree!

It retains the enjoyment out of horror that most horror films forget today. Most scary films are more about ear shattering loud bangs instead of genuine suspense and storytelling. The atmosphere in The Thing pretty much builds itself so there's no need for contrivances and artifice to carry the film along, and what shocks are involved are sparingly used and innovative. You like pretty much all the characters and you understand the riffs created between them, and at the end of the day, it's simply perfect craftsmanship from a perfect suspense filmmaker.

Granted a dare say the usual suspects will be coming here soon and saying how it's dated because some off the effects aren't rendered in computers.

The Thing (1982) rocks! I saw it for the first time with some of my buddies on cable or VHS back in '82? I was like whoaaa!!

I'm sure I've seen it at least 10 times since then. 4/4 movie

Well said! That sense of paranoia the reeks about the compound just adds another layer of suspense to the whole affair. You're constantly trying to figure out who is The Thing. Upon repeat viewings, knowing who's who, you still are on edge throughout the film, which is a testament to the filmmaking.

Not sure about perfect, but John Carpenter's The Thing is one of the best horror film ever made. I couldn't watch it as a kid without having nightmares.

It's very good but pales against The Thing from another World which is far superior.

Suspenseful, well acted, amazing practical effects, mood-atmosphere, ambiguous ending, director at the top of his game, quotable , memorable,
re-watchable, scary

It's hard to say any film is perfect but I personally don't see any faults and I would rank it as one if the best horror movies ever made

Another thread gets nagysaudio'd

I'd rather watch paint dry than read the stuff you post on here.

Enough with the personal jabs. If you don't like it, don't read. I'm not attacking anyone, just posting my opinions of movies. Why don't you try doing the same.

First let me say that I already know I am in the minority, so dont bother flaming me.

That being said, I have never been terribly impressed by JC's The Thing. It's okay, but nothing special at all, in my opinion. Of course, there are very very few John Carpenter movies that I think are any good at all.

I can accept this, but I just have one question:

Is Halloween one of them?
