Default Scariest scenes in films

A thread for talking about scenes in movies that almost made you sh!t your pants. A scene does not necessarily have to be from a horror film to qualify.

I mentioned this in another thread. It's from a movie I saw when I was a kid back in 1974 called "It's Alive". When this "baby" cried or whatever it was doing, it scared the living crap out of me. Of course, by today's standards, it seems hokey. But back in the day, it was scary as hell.

THIS!!!!! Creeps me the hell out. The first half of this movie is pure genius. Too bad it fell apart in the third act.

Just to throw some non-horror moments out there...
  • The scene in The Wages of Fear where the trucks have to maneuver onto a rotten wooden platform in order to continue along a road.
  • The scene in Sorcerer where the trucks have to cross a rotten wooden bridge over a river.

Besides the Insidious scene, which was already mentioned, I would probably have to go with the last five to ten minutes of The Blair Witch Project.

When they go into the little abandoned cottage...

Holy s#!t, YES!!

That scene was so fast and yet sooooooo creepy. It's one of the few scenes from film that has stuck with me after having given me the serious heebie-jeebies.

Gotta go with Salem's Lot (1979). The scene with Ned Tibbets in the jail cell. Ned wakes up to see Barlow lunge at him while he is in the cot and you get a great close up view of Barlows face. Pretty impressive scene for a made-for-TV movie.

INSIDIOUS to me is not scary at all - people standing around in the dark wearing white greasepaint while a loud BANG! sounds is really a cheap scare - making people jump by inserting a loud noise in the soundtrack, not necessarily because they are terrified by what is happening onscreen.

For me, films that use imagery, atmosphere and suspense are the truly scary ones - I think the scene in BURNT OFFERINGS when
[Show spoiler]Oliver Reed and Bette Davis are hiding in the bedroom while you hear the coffin coming closer and closer and then the chauffeur bursts through the door with the coffin
is one of the scariest film moments I have seen.

Another extremely creepy moment is in the 1979 television adaption of ' SALEMS LOT, when
[Show spoiler]an undead Ralphie Glick comes scratching at the window to claim his brother Danny
. I agree with the1tyrant - even though it was made for tv, it has moments that are a lot scarier than many theatrically released films.

How about Katie getting dragged off the bed in Paranormal Activity? And then the door slams shut after it has her out of the room.

I remember watching that at a friend's house one night and then had to walk home after it was over. I can assure you that "walk" had no part of how I got home that night. I could have been the poster boy for Pink Floyd's "Run Like Hell"!!!

When
[Show spoiler]Leatherface suddenly appears and chainsaws Franklin in the woods
in TCM '74. Also Leatherface's dance at the end always creeps me out.

Many scenes in Event Horizon early on, namely when they're listening to the voice recordings.

The first half of Mama when you don't really see anything (sometimes not seeing something is scarier than having it in your face). The second half when you actually see the ghost a lot, it was kind of stupid. But the first half was pretty scary the first time I saw it.
