Default iTunes extras finally on Apple TV

and coming to iOS 8 in September.

Plus new content will automatically be added to previously purchased movies for free. This is why digital copies are the way forward.

99.9% nail in the coffin for me when it comes to buying BDs now. Holy shit, how long have I awaited for this.

I'm mildly interested, but I am questioning how this works. (I'm at work so I can't test it...)

Does the iTunes Extra content stay in the cloud then? I purchase a ton of movies from iTunes, and I have just decided to delete the extras before they even download (which FUBARs my download queue every once in a while). Some of these extras are over 1GB. I don't want that on my HDD.

Yep it looks like they live in the Cloud. Which is an advantage for if you don't want them on your hdd, but personally I like to have things backed up in case future content disputes remove items. So I have mixed feelings at the mo. I suspect that in 10 years all content will be in the cloud but I still worry....

I'm on iTunes on my Mac at work- you can access extras right through iTunes- nothing needs downloaded (also- my movies arent downloaded either).

I'm curious about how this now stacks up with Roku.
Can you watch Vudu's bonus features through Roku?
I'm pretty sure Amazon doesn't have any special features- if they do, can you access them via Roku?

iTunes Extras are way better than Vudu's bonus features, but I'm curious if this furthers the gap via accessibility.

Side note- this allows me to stream original versions of films too. I have tons of movies that are extended- example- Lord of the Rings Extended (I actually prefer the theatrical)- now I can watch either/or. Same with dozens of others: About Time, Adjustment Bureau, Admission, Adventures of Tintin- just mentioning my As.

Yeah, I download all my purchases, but a few years ago, I found that I really don't care about the features/commentary enough to download. If I lost the ability to DL again, I was fine with - as long as I had the actual movie.

Of course, then Marvel came along and started adding the one-shots to their releases...

Thanks for the update.

Surprised that Apple/the studios are letting the extended/original thing go.

Does it give you a pop up prompting you to select which version?

I wish I could access my iTunes library at work. (I work at a financial company, so internet security is locked down.... I'm actually surprised they haven't shut down my access to this site. )

For some reason- the pic is tiny- but in the top left corner *the gold font* , it says "iTunes Extras (Original Version)" And will download the original version of it. On iTunes, it doesn't allow you to stream it- just download. So I'd have to try it on my Apple TV to see if I can stream.

Ok, just upgraded to iTunes 11.3 and confirmed my Apple TV has the latest firmware version 6.2. I see new blue icons indicating iTunes Extras are available when I browse my iCloud movie collection and similar icons when I browse local movies that I've downloaded to my Macbook. The only problem, I can't seem to figure out how to play any of the iTunes extras through my Apple TV. So I guess this latest Apple update is a big fail in terms of the level of intuitiveness.

That doesn't let you stream the original version of the movie, it allows you to download the original version of the iTunes Extras. It's displayed when the studio hasn't updated that movie to the new version of iTunes Extras. Nothing to do with which version of the movie you're able to view (theatrical or extended).

Also, only the latest version of iTunes Extras are streamable to Apple TV. If you see the iCloud logo and not the blue iTunes Extras graphic, it's the old-style extras. I wonder how long it will take some studios to update their old extras.

Just choose Play. If the movie has extras, you'll know it right away because you get a menu instead of jumping straight into the movie. I agree, not what I expected.

Yes, I see now, I got it to work for my movies in the iCloud. They have incorporated a menu when you press play just like on a regular disc.

I have to admit, this is a pretty good update! I wonder if all the UV providers, Google and Amazon will follow suit.

God lord, MAN OF STEEL, PACIFIC RIM, and GRAVITY's iTunes Extras have all been updated with all the extras from their BD counterparts.

That kick ass Maximum Movie Mode on the 2nd disc for MAN OF STEEL? Yeah, it's on here as well.

INTO DARKNESS' Enhanced Commentary is included for that film!

Ahh- I see. Thanks for that info. So we now need the studios to get with it on these older titles... as if we'll see that happening.

An HD movie is around 4gb, and the extras can be around 1gb. Thats a lot for only 8gb of flash which is also formatted- to hold the OS and to act as a buffer. Really hoping we get an ATV update around the corner.

I only saw it on Frozen and Jungle Book, but you can play specific song parts of the movies individually.

All I can say is about time. Found it nuts that my Original Apple TV could play Extras (Obviously due to the hard drive) but not my 3rd Gen. As they say, All good things come to those who wait! Or as the impatient person inside me would say, why so long Apple, why? Lol!

I can see one major advantage of using the cloud - when HEVC/H.265 iTunes content/Apple hardware is launched in the near future it will mean that iTunes/ATV can choose either the older H.264 or new HEVC version depending on the users hardware setup. Rather than having to re-download everything and setup problems occurring.

Looking at how this new iTunes Extra is setup I think it could be TV show friendly too (unlike the old version)...

From what I undestand not all titles support the "new" iTunes Extras and some of the older iTunes Extras dorsnt seem to have been upgraded to the new version either, correct?

Perhaps it would be useful with a new thread listing all titles suporting the new extras?
