Default The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920)

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari Blu-ray

Quote:
In 1920, one brilliant movie jolted the postwar masses and catapulted the movement known as German Expressionism into film history. That movie was The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, a plunge into the mind of insanity that severs all ties with the rational world. Director Robert Wiene and a visionary team of designers crafted a nightmare realm in which light, shadow and substance are abstracted, a world in which a demented doctor and a carnival sleepwalker perpetrate a series of ghastly murders in a small community. This authoritative edition of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is a 4K restoration scanned from the (mostly) preserved camera negative at the German Federal Film Archive. Special Features: Booklet Essay by Kristin Thompson, Caligari: How Horror Came to the Cinema (Documentary, 52 minutes), New Music Score by Paul D. Miller aka DJ Spooky, Image Gallery, Restoration Demonstration.

IMDB - 8.1 ( 29,789 users )

Rotten Tomatoes - 100% ( 45 reviews counted )

Won't this likely only have English-language intertitles? I'll be sticking with MoC for the booklet and assumed additional extras as well.

Here's the restoration trailer posted by Eureka. Of course, the US transfer will be virtually identical to the UK transfer.

I am totally in if they have the german inter-titles. If not I wait or get Masters of cinema later on.

There's a huge problem with Kino's silent film releases. They don't know how to properly encode sub-24 fps content and produce choppy looking encodes with lots of missing frames.

See their release of Nosferatu for an example.

The other thing is, they often only provide altered English language intertitles, which some may not like.

Forgot to mention the third problem of Kino's releases: their cover art for these Weimar era films has been pretty terrible. Just compare them with Eureka's covers which are all based on posters from that era.

Wait, I thought Nosferatu was the ONLY example of this happening. Are there others where this is different from MOC? I have many of their other silent releases as well, and never noticed a problem with them. Then again, I thought the choppiness in Nosferatu was inherent in the source till I heard about the issue and compared it with MOCs.

$20 seems like a solid opening price for a Kino release, especially one as monumental as this...I believe I will lock it in!

I just don't trust Kino when they release titles. Check on blu ray.com reviews and you will see why. I am shocked Nosferatu got such a good release from Kino, but I have trusted Eureka (Masters of Cinema) since finding their Sunrise and City Girl looking amazing! Eureka for me on Cabinet. I will spend a little extra for a great transfer.

Sticking to the MoC release for this and other silents.
Especially in light of the discussion over Nosferatu.

Sounds awesome to see this horror classic in 4K as it could be one of the most stunning looking transfers for a silent film

Here's an article and video clip about the restoration, from the BBC, back in February: http://www.bbc.com/culture/story/201...silent-classic

Preorder price has shot up to $27 on Amazon. Guess I'll be waiting a while until it drops.
