USA The Dark Half (1993) coming from Scream Factory!

Just announced at Comic Con.

Quote:
"King And Romero Are Their Twisted Best!" - Rolling Stone

Masters of horror Stephen King (The Shinning) and George A. Romero (Night Of The Living Dead) have created a "gripping, creepy, frightening" (L.A. Reader) film that thrills, shocks and works us over" (Los Angeles Times)! Featuring an "intelligent screenplay and first-rate cast" (The New York Times), including Oscar winner Timothy Hutton, The Dark Half will keep you captivated to the chilling end.

Horror writer Thad Beaumont (Hutton) hopes to distance himself from his murder novels and from George Stark, the name he has used to anonymously author them. To achieve this, he cooks up a murder of his own: a publicity stunt that should lay Stark to rest forever. But when the people around him are found gruesomely slain - and his own fingerprints dot the crime scenes - Beaumont is dumbfounded until he learns that Stark has taken on life of his own...and begun a gruesome quest for vengeance!

I'm excited they are putting this one out. I've always been surprised that this is one of King/Romero's lesser thought of movies. I think it's very good. Especially the performances.

Romero was....not really that good at King movies in general.
It takes a David Cronenberg, John Carpenter or a Rob Reiner to sift out the literature from the pulp in King's books, and Romero, never one for subtlety, is definitely on the pulp side.

Even "Thinner", as unfairly reviled as it is, had Tom Holland, and that's at the "better" end of the Romero/King scale.

While I really like the version that came out, I would have loved to have seen Romero's version of Pet Sematary.

More than likely be using the same transfer as the French BD, interested to see what features are produced though.

Never bought it since, if I recall correctly, it was never widescreen on home video, so I haven't seen it since it was first in theaters. Very much looking forward to it, even if it is a rather mediocre adaptation.

My UK MGM DVD is in anamorphic widescreen.

I always forget that, for some readers, the caveat "in the U.S." does not just go without saying.

In regards to the aspect ratio, interesting to note that Romero has stated himself that he actually prefers the full screen version of The Dark Half over the widescreen. The french blu-ray which is widescreen looks great, if the extras on this US edition are worthwhile, I'll get it.

Sadly, I've never seen this, even though I've owned it on DVD for years, but will definitely get it being a Romero film!

I enjoyed the book when I read it years ago but have never seen it on film. Although I do love most of the Stephen King film adaptations I can admit that a lot are not that great objectively. The books are simply too detailed, effects heavy and to be flushed out effectively in a movie run time or on a TV budget like IT or The Stand.

I never trust these quotes from directors when they were made back in the days when 4:3 TVs were the norm. I think some directors were just more displeased by the look of letterboxing bars than additional image in the frame. Now that 16:9 sets are the norm, it is the so-called full-screen version that would actually bring letterboxing bars into play now.

He has shot movies open matte and composed for 1.33 (Martin), which he actually stated on a commentary he preferred full screen. The same with NOTLD. I guess it's just personal taste, the man did work in tv a lot as well. Maybe someone should ask him when they get the chance.

Either way, I've always enjoyed The Dark Half in Widescreen, regardless of what was the norm. I consider it one of Romero's best shot movies, I also liked Bruiser in that regard.

In regards to extras, there is a workprint that has a couple of additional and alternate scenes showing a bit more of George Stark. When he calls Thad in the grocery store it cuts to Stark in a phone booth (in the movie it only shows Thad), as well as an extra sequence where Stark kidnaps Liz and the kids. It would be nice if they could find those scenes and add them as extras.
