I am new to the forum, so thanks for your responses.
I have read many of the posts but didn't get what answers I needed. I have a few questions. 1. Why should I spend the extra money for Bluray over HDDVD? 2. Will all movies eventually be in Bluray? 3. I am not certain now would be a good time to by and from what I have read so far Bluray would be the way to go over HDDVD, I am actually looking at this time next year for the purchase. 4. Does anyone see any new technology coming in the near future that will make Bluray obsolete? I want to thank every one that replys the more information I have the better decision I can make. |

1. HD DVD...Sucks 2. Probably not, but Blu is already dominating and most manufacturers back Blu-rAY over HDdvd.....oh, sorry I forgot Toshiba, too bad everyone else backs Blu 3. Why wait until next Year? That only means you will have that many more Blu-Ray movies to buy!!!!!! 4. Blu-Ray my friend..........is THE FUTURE HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAA |

1) This site, in whole, pretty much answers that question. Higher storage capacity (50GB to 30GB on dual-layer discs), more bandwidth capacity, and scratch resistant coating on the discs has led (combined with BD+)
to more movie studio support, which is a major reason to go Blu in its own right. 2) Hopefully. Universal Studios is the only major holdout - the company has yet to put anything out on Blu-Ray and has no timetable for making such a decision to do so in the future. 3) It is extremely unlikely Blu-Ray will lose and cease to exist. At worst, there will be a stalemate that means you will have to get an HD-DVD player in order to watch Universal Studios' movies. 4) There are always going to be new technologies, but downloading is probably more likely to be the thing of the future than a new type of disc. Blu-Ray is going to be a primary way of getting HD movies for the foreseeable future. In other news, Warner Bros. Studios came up with a hybrid disc (Blu-Ray and HD-DVD), but recently shelved the idea. |

You should spend the extra money because you're buying into something that will actually be supported 3 years down the road.
With the sales starting now for Christmas (Sony BD player $299 after price drop and $100 free gift card on BestBuy.com tomorrow, plus 5 free movies by mail), this is the best time this year to buy. PS3 will drop at least another $100 (I predict $150) by this time next year as well, and I expect we'll have a $2-250 Blu settop deck by then You know, it really depends on how you see "all movies". Not even CLOSE to all movies are out on DVD a decade after its premiere A better way to put it is "Do you in 10 years see Blu-ray as the default release format for movies", then the answer is yes. |

Thanks for your Opinions, it's helped alot.
Right now I am thinking of going with Vizio 42"1080p HDTV or Sharp Aquos 42dg4u 42" HDTV can't decide between them. Not sure about Player though I do know it will be Bluray |

Everything made out there has a higher contrast ratio than anything Vizio makes, so go with the AQUOS.
If you don't get a PS3 wait for a player that will support the FULL BD Profile (Internet, memory, audio specs, etc.). Most if not all players out there right now will never play the full profile except for maybe the PS3. |

You're kidding right? You can't even compare the quality of a Sharp Aquos to a Vizio TV. Go Sharp. |

Hd dvd's will be pulled from retailers shelves. With blu-ray movies outselling hd dvds at roughly 2 to 1 all year it is just a matter of time before stores decide to use all available hd space for blu-rays.
Stores will not put the wishes of hd dvd owners above profit. Many retailers have already begun, in fact. |

It seems like a one horse race to me.
If you go into the stores here to buy discs they stock a vast choice of Blu-Ray titles and only a handful of HD-DVD titles (and most of them are dual blu-ray/hd-dvd releases!). Maybe the PS3 having a blu-ray drive has had a major impact in this but i think its more likely to be the titles that should appear on blu should they follow the companies that the dvd's were released on. 20th Century Fox put out all the Star Wars & Indiana Jones movies, then there is James Bond whose rights have been bought by Sony. Put one of these out each week and thats 30 weeks on the run blu-ray would hammer HD-DVD. Add to that if Universal were to go blu only then the list would include Jaws, ET, Back To The Future, etc. Its a waiting game, and probably one thats only being played by those companies that are taking the money for hd-dvd rights only to double the money in 2 years for a blu-ray deal. Transformers is the only thing that could cause a problem (its already out in the US and didn't do that well), but will probably turn up on blu-ray with better extras than the HD-DVD version inside 12 months. |

1. Blu-ray is superior. HD DVD doesn't really exist in foreign places. HD DVD has been outsold all year long. More Blu-ray consumers, more movie selection and more company support. 2. Eventually MOST movies will be on Blu-ray. The only movie i hear about that everyone complains about is Transformers. That will eventually be on Blu-ray. 3. One thing is for sure, Blu-ray is here to stay. Wether HD DVD dies or not (which they will), Blu-ray will be around for a very very very long time. 4. No new technology that i know of. Except that HD DVD players will eventually be an excellent coaster for all households. Remember, "Opinions are like @$$holes, everyones got'em..", but my opinion is right... because HD DVD is garbage and can go to hell. Thank you. |

Like everyone else here, I will add my 2¢. 1 - Blu-ray players are all capable of the highest quality sound and image, while most (if not all) of the lower priced HD-DVD players are not. In addition, Blu-ray has more studios, more manufacturers, more movies, better sales, and more potential for growth. With extra storage and bandwidth that HD-DVD lacks, you get more room for content and high quality images and sound. For an HD media player, the quality an the price are comparable, in that if the quality of the player is the same, the price will be about the same. As for the discs, usually you will find the prices the same or less for Blu-ray. This is because many HD-DVD movies also bundle together the DVD on the "b side" of the disc, which raises the price. 2 - Right now more movies are on Blu-ray, but only 2 major studios do not support it, Paramount and Universal. Every other major studio is releasing to Blu-ray, most of the exclusively. Eventually most titles will be on Blu-ray from these companies, and if the market continues in the way it is headed, all the studios will eventually join Blu-ray within a year or 2. In addition, any movie you currently own on DVD will play on every Blu-ray player available today. They will even up-convert the image to a high definition image (not nearly as good, crisp, or clear as a Blu-ray, but much better than a regular standard definition image). So your entire existing library will play on your new Blu-ray player, and look great too. 3 - Although it is up to you when you want to buy one, I will say that 2 things. If you wait, the prices of the players and discs are going to drop even more, there will be more movies available, and the latest profile updates for interactivity will be fully integrated into the system. On the other hand, right now you can watch and enjoy the best quality in HD movies today, you can buy a player that will still be compatible with the new profile, and you can start working on building your Blu-ray library now instead of later. If you do not want to be an "early adopter" with the chance that your chosen format will fail, than wait. But if you are truly a fan of HD media and want the best available, Blu-ray is the best bet and will last for many many years. 4 - The latest reports on new technology actually are within and without the Blu-ray community. Within the Blu-ray community, there are confirmed reports of Hitachi and TDK making 100 GB and even 200 GB models of the Blu-ray, capable of holding over 18 hours of 1080p HD media per disc. Without of the community, there are 2 technologies, neither of which are ready yet. The most notable and already being used technology is direct digital downloads. You can download high definition films to your computer and watch them that way, even rent them. However the image is not in 1080p, it is compressed often showing compression error and other "artifacts", and they do not support HD sound or surround sound. These downloads have a few years to improve their capability and compression before they can replace Blu-ray. The best technology in development and is not available yet is Holographic discs. These discs will be capable of storing over 3 TB of data, but are likely going to enter the market in 5 to 10 years, and may be replaced by something else entirely by then. It is hard to say what will happen that far in the future of electronics, but there is nothing viable to replace Blu-ray in the near future. Hope I helped. |

Go Blu-ray dude. Its got great movies, a good support base, and if you love movies you will want to get the best picture and audio. That will be Blu-ray for years to come.
PS. Guys I have a VIZIO and its a great product. I have had it for about six months now and its just as good as when I bought it. Out of two HDTVs, one was a SANYO which I sold to get a VIZIO, the VIZIO produces alot better picture. My school I am attending to right now has 2 Sharps in the cafeteria and I cant tell any difference between them and my VIZIO. 32" lcd VIZIO 720p/1080i 80gb PS3/ Blu-ray player 3 PS3 games 4 Blu-ray discs / soon to own 10 more 250+DVDs most horror ![]() ![]() ![]() |

And Bond's ownership is a bit confusing last time I checked. I could be very wrong on this but it was originally MGM, but Casino Royale and I think the next one are being released by Sony, then the distribution is going back to MGM. I still think sony owns MGM, but Fox does all the distribution. Either way, it's blu forever. 1. Better quality - 1080P, higher bitrate, more storage capacity, more studio support, and we're going to win the war 2. All - never. A good chunk (more than you could ever buy) - very likely 3. IF you're completely against a PS3 and don't want to have to upgrade to get a profile 1.1 (Picture in Picture extras) player - than wait a bit until there's some good selecton on 1.1 players 4. Nothing on the Radar, but something will replace it eventually unless sony can make the 100GB or 200GB discs work extremely well. THink of it this way - would you have completely avoided DVD if I had told you 10 years ago that something better was coming out in 10 years time? Last edited by bajor27; 11-28-2007 at 05:34 AM. |
