I already own a Bdp300 sony blu-ray player and LOVE the blu format. However I am a huge movie buff and with some titles not available on blu I am thinking about buying a hd player(with christmas Specials) and hooking it up along side my blu-ray. I am wanting to get members opinons on If and when the format war will ever end. Would I be wasting money on buying a player and films in hi-def? I really want the best of both worlds but should I just wait the war out(it seems to me that Blu ray is all but ready to lock things up. But with paramounts defection and the other studio(?) I just really want some of these films, Like The Big Lebowski. I am all for blu to rule but I have some estra $, shoudl I use it to buy blu discs, or get a high def player and just collect both? Like I said im only considering it because of my love of movies.

Your an adult and can make those tough desicions. I personally would love to get "Heroes" but will not buy a third rate player just to watch a few movies.
I know good things come to those who wait and Heroes will be out soon on blu. If I was in your situation id use that extra income to buy all those blu's I want but haven't been able to buy. But as I said it your call. |

This is a tough one. Toshiba has essentially come to the realization that they aren't going to "win" this war, and are playing to a draw at this point. The upside of that is that if the BD companies play their cards right, they can win this thing and we'll end up with only Blu-ray players and movies within another 8-15 months. The downside is that Toshiba and Microsoft are going to keep doing anything possible just to get their format to survive, mainly in order to protect royalties on DVDs (and VC-1/HDi in Microsoft's case).
Personally, I battled with this for some time as well, as there are definitely some titles I would like to have that are HD DVD exclusive. I couldn't bring myself to support the other format, though. Even though the money isn't really an issue, having a potentially obsolete player would annoy me, and keeping this format war going would annoy me even more. In the end, I decided that patience is a virtue and to keep buying BDs (and a second BD player), and to just wait out the contracts on the movies I'd like from the other side. But, if you decide to go that route, I certainly wouldn't hold it against you. To each their own. |

Thanks so far for the advice. I want to support blu so I guess buying a hd would in some way be a contribution to the stalemate. Jaded mentioned Hereos, which is something I wanted to get but I am already leaning towards patience. The advantages of blu are so one sided I am wondering why Toshiba and hi def only studios arnt willing to just release in both formats for the moment and let the market decide. Toshiba's Board of Directors have to realize that they are losing and just because they buyout a studio to only release on high def , one studio only represents only like 10% of available movies. On the other hand Warner Bros. is keeping the stalemate going by releasing on both but smarter because their sales will be higher. Toshiba and Paramount (whats the other high def-studio?) business sense makes no sense!!!

Look at it this way: until the HD DVD studios come around, you can always enjoy their product on DVD. Not high def, sure, but better than nothing or prolonging the war. All good things come to those who wait. |

Yeah but i traded most of my dvds to A local video store(nearly 300)got little over 3 times that which I used to buy a bunch of bluray at once( that was fun!!!) Im just gonna wait. I am so enjoying watching movies in blu that every repurchase of a dvd I used to own is like a new experience when I watch on blu. Decision made! wait it out and they will come.
