Criterion It Happened One Night (1934)

It Happened One Night Blu-ray PRE-ORDER

Quote:
New 4K digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray
New conversation between critics Molly Haskell and Phillip Lopate
Frank Capra’s American Dream, a 1997 feature-length documentary
Director Frank Capra’s first film, the 1922 silent short The Ballad of Fisher’s Boarding House
American Film Institute tribute to Capra from 1982
Trailer
PLUS: An essay by critic Farran Smith Nehm
Quote:
Opposites attract with magnetic force in this romantic road-trip delight from Frank Capra, about a spoiled runaway socialite (Claudette Colbert) and a roguish man-of-the-people reporter (Clark Gable) who is determined to get the scoop on her scandalous disappearance. The first film to accomplish the very rare feat of sweeping all five major Oscar categories (best picture, best actor, best actress, best director, and best screenplay), It Happened One Night is among the most gracefully constructed and edited films of the early sound era, packed with clever situations and gags that have entered the Hollywood comedy pantheon. Featuring two actors at the top of their game, sparking with a chemistry that has never been bettered, this is the birth of the screwball comedy.

Pleasantly surprised that this is coming so soon. I had figured first quarter 2015 for this. Having only seen this on TCM broadcasts, a 4K restoration in 1080p should be revelatory.

I cannot wait to see the new transfer. After sampling The Man from Laramie, Two Rode Together, All the King's Men and Born Yesterday I would have it guess it will be stunning.

I think Oscar Rothman should apologize to you.

He should also stop creating new threads as penance for his behavior in your thread.

I wonder if this increases the chances for the other GREAT films in the Capra set to get blu ray releases ..by Criterion or otherwise

They have been all restored in 4K, so yes. By "all" I mean Sony owned Capra's. I would be surprised if Criterion didn't secured the rights to all of them.

I saw a preview of this on Sony's 4K Unlimited server. Was not impressed. Looked soft. Nevertheless this is one of my favorite films and will be getting it.

I love the movie and will buy the blu-ray but the extras are very disappointing especially considering this is coming from Criterion. It seems it won't have any of the extras from the DVD except for the trailer. Most of Criterion's extras are about Frank Capra and not the movie itself. Criterion should have included the Lux Radio Theater radio broadcast of It Happened One Night (with both Gable and Colbert reprising their roles) at a bare minimum.

For those that don't own the DVD, this is what it had for extras:
-Frank Capra, Jr. audio commentary
-Frank Capra, Jr. Remembers..."It Happened One Night" [11:16]
-Vintage Advertising - A gallery of lobby cards and posters.
-Live Radio Broadcast - The March 20, 1939, episode of Lux Radio Theater. Gable and Colbert perform It Happened One Night [59:36]
-Theatrical Trailers - It Happened One Night, Mr. Smith Goes To Washington, and Lost Horizon.
-Talent Files - Biographies and filmographies for Capra, Gable, and Colbert.
