Most stores no longer allow for returns or exchanges on boxing day and boxing day week. You have to go back to the store January 3rd or later. The "normal" amount of time you normally have to return purchases is also extended to reflect those new policies.

Boxing Day has all our big sales, but they usually last Boxing Week. It's December 26th, the day after Christmas, and the savings are ridiculous in some cases, I'm glad I Don't work Retail anymore, last year, we had a Line Up around the Block to get into Future Shop at 5:00 am. Some TVs were selling at upto 50% off, and i mean HD LCDs and Plasmas, It's where i got my Aquos, and I love it to death.

Tell me about it. Somebody always ends up in the hospital because they got trampled.

I think the name came from an old tradition years ago of people taking their gifts from under the tree, and getting rid of all the boxes...something like that...I think?

That's capitalism, IMHO. They try to have as many extra holidays or special shopping days as possible to maximize the retail sales, and consumer spending in general... It's seems to get worse each year, as Xmas stuff is put out sooner & sooner, even weeks before Halloween... These holidays become big family traditions for many people. A lot of money spent, but they are exciting times of the year though...so feel better about going broke! ![]() |

Not to mention xmas season starts in mid november in canadian stores. The xmas decorations, fake snowflakes, you'd think those stores are trying to send their shoppers some subliminal messages.

Boxing day here for the past couple years has been pretty pathetic. The sales are really lackluster and not nearly as busy as past years.

Black Friday is the day retailers are supposed to be "in the black", and so everything after that is gravy. Thanksgiving is based on the legend (how true is debateable) of the Pilgrims who after being kicked out of England came to Massachusetts and were saved by the local Indian tribe who assisted their winter preperations and were able to survive the year. They had a feast to celebrate. Most cultures have a harvest festival, this is just our version (Germany Oktoberfest for example) What are some Belgian sales holidays? |

e.g. The lords would wait until the day after Xmas to give out a box of practical goods to the serfs. The servants would get given a Christmas Box (a gift) by their masters. The day after Xmas the retailers would start to adjust the stock away from things specifically for gift giving, and rather than box and store them, they'd sell them off cheap. |

Having a harvest festival here right now would make no sense what so ever. |
