Default PS3 Sales Taking Blu Over the Top?

I went to the Best Buy near my home yesterday late in the afternoon. The store was still jammed with people. They had the 40 GB PS3 selling pretty well as I saw a number of people with those under their arms. When I went to the HD aisle I saw something that really told the tale...

5 shelves of Blu to 2 shelves of HD HD DVD in terms of floor space. This was a 50/50 ratio only a month or so ago. The Blu shelves were really picked over too! HD DVD looked neat and orderly like nobody had touched them!

I think this Holiday season is going to be huge for Sony and the PS3. I'm not sure this ends the "war" but it may be the beginning of the end. Best Buy wasn't offering anything special like Walmart in terms of picking 10 movies out of their stock for free either. There's no explaining the picked-over Blu shelves other than saying that the folks buying PS3's were heading right over to the Blu aisle and picking up a couple movies to go along with their new Blu player.

font page of amazon.com 10 free bla bla. That sucks ! Ive seen that all week and I keep receiving hd-dvd player deals in the mail. They are really targeting the average joe aggressively. This is a bit anyoing and alarming. After all its a standalone player that suppose to play only movies.

I disagree and I have said many times before that the ps3 can not alone win the war for blu-ray. They need more cheap options for blu-ray standalones.

the region free thing for hd-dvd + the low price + the name HD-DVD is my main concern.

The 40GB PS3 is selling better than Sony expected, and if all those people buy just one Blu-ray movie, that would be good. I did just come back from a popular electronics store where I saw Toshiba HD players for $199. Hopefully the stupids won't be blinded by the low price.

Great news in Canada that Best Buy and Future Shop have finally dropped the standalone prices to near-US levels ($449 for BDP-S300 for example)... Bad news is still no Panasonics showing up anywhere...

And PS3s selling like hotcakes everywhere.

That's the $400 PS3! I know it's not a standalone but that's dirt cheap for a Blu-ray player. Blu-ray's technology is very different than HD-DVD (which is based on many DVD patents) and much more expensive to reproduce.

Expect the $400 20 GIG PS3 to vanish after X-mas. This is a temporary price drop that is strictly a marketing technique.

I can't wait for the next round of price cuts...when the BD players come out @ $400, and the venturer players come out. I wanna see HD get the respect it deserves and the price cuts should do that imo.

The Venturer is a repackaged A3. They may be made by the same Chinese manufacturer.

I went to Best Buy, Wal Mart, Fred Meyer Electronic, Fry's, all of them are out of PS3.
The 40 gig one is selling like crazy while the 80 gig one is catching up to it.
At all these store, I've seen Blu-ray movies being picked left and right.

Oh yeah, I pick up my second PS3 as well, from Target. Last one they had too.

Now I got my old 60 gig in my room, the new 40 gig in my brother's room, and a soon to be another new one in my living room, we're setting up our home theater.

The future is truly Blu.

I went to Frys in Renton, WA a few days ago and they had 4 pallets of PS3s. I went just before closing last night and it didn't seem like all that many were gone. Not like I had hoped. It is possible they had brought some out from the back, but if not it just doesn't seem to be selling like I had hoped at that store. But, I will check again maybe tomorrow and see what is left. At least we should get NPD numbers around the middle of December to give us a good idea of how they sold (if Sony doesn't announce something first), as one store really doesn't tell the tale.

wow thats pretty crazy. good to hear its selling so well. when i got to circuit city yesterday they had what looked like 40-50 ps3's. there were 10 when i got to the front of the line. and people were leaving because there were non on the shelf, they had them sitting next to the registers, so i'd say sony probably cleaned up pretty well this weekend

I also think the BDA needs another alternative to the PS3, too many average consumers think of it as a gaming machine and may not be into video games at all. We need an inexpensive standalone to counter with.

More and more stores are adding space for blu. My local BB has the 5 to 2 split as well for blu. Even my CC has a end cap of Blu with a demo now running and where just a few weeks ago the HD DVD spread was 6 to 2, it is now 50 50.

Nice to see more and more support from these retailers in favor of blu.

Sales are excellent, but I mean a regularily priced $300 player or lower to counter with. If there is one, excuse my post.
