Default Jamaica Inn (1939) (75th Anniversary Edition)

Amazon pre-order

4K restoration, no less!

Quote:
Having world-premiered at Cannes's Classics 2014 program, Alfred Hitchcock's last UK film, "Jamaica Inn," is now touring the country after receiving a 4K restoration.

The Cohen Film Collection, in cooperation with BFI, is taking the 1939 film "Jamaica Inn," Alfred Hitchcock's last British film, on the road. The tour begins on October 7 at the 2014 New York Film Festival, and continues on to the 2014 Chicago Film Festival.

Based on Daphne Du Maurier's novel, the film follows a young woman who discovers a gang of criminals organizing shipwrecks for money. This was the first of three Du Maurier books that Hitchcock would go on to direct, the other two being "Rebecca" (1940) and "The Birds" (1963).

Starring Maureen O'Hara of "Miracle on 34th Street" (1947) and Charles Laughton of "Spartacus" (1960), this trailer for the restoration invokes Hitchcock's rich vision for the set design and special effects that bring this adventurous tale to life.

The film will be released on DVD and Blu-ray on May 12, 2015. Check out the trailer below.

Sweet! I mean it was only a matter of time, but always nice to have the date. Day 1 for sure! Hopefully the Keaton titles aren't far behind.

That's great! I loved Charles Laughton's performance in that film.

Outstanding. I'm looking forward to adding another Hitchcock film to my collection (26 Blu-rays at present...all of the Region A releases).

But PSYCHO from the UK has the mono track as lossles! Anyway, I too will patiently own the majority of worthwhile Blu-ray releases of Hitchcock films, no matter how long it takes me.

Nice release! Did the Kino DVD feature any extras? Too lazy to look at my printouts from DVDCompare.net right now. So if Cohen is able to release a few other Hitchcock titles to Blu, perhaps a forthcoming boxset? I don't like the large intrusive red C they put on their front covers so I'm heavily considering to get a commission from Nissen to do a cover. Obviously would already match his current Hitchcock covers.
May 12th is still a bit ways off but it should be at a good price point, hopefully.

This is the only Hitchcock they own, through the Rohauer library they bought.

Great news!!
This is the first Hitchcock I ever saw in my childhood.
Of course I didn't know who was Hitchcock back then!
Will definitely purchase it!

Off topic question but do you know what Keaton titles they have? Are there new restorations (4K even?). I think I heard about them aquiring a bunch of rights, but didn't know anything was actually inevitable.

Basically I want to know if I need to dump my Kino/Lorber versions.

If you go here, you can do a search for Keaton, and it will bring up those titles.

Fantastic! I have every Hitchcock film, and every available blu ray with the exception of the disappointing Easy Virtue. Can't wait to add a high quality copy of Jamaica Inn to my collection. Hitchcock is my favorite director. I never tire of watching his films.

Thanks. I just now saw your reply when this thread got bumped.

Looks they only have a small part of the Keaton library and only a couple of the feature lenght films. I already knew about the 4K of "The General" from a couple of years ago, and continue to anxiously wait/hope that it gets released to blu-ray.

Always good to get more Hitchcock even though I don't think the film is very highly regarded (I've not seen it myself)

I guess Frenzy doesn't count as a British film since it was produced by Universal? Or does it??

This is one of the few Hitchcock's I haven't seen.

How good is this film?
