Japan Perfect Blue Blu-ray Version [Japan]

Perfect Blue Blu-ray

Perfect Blue Blu-ray Ltd Ed

No specs, but it will be coming out in a special edition and standard edition.
Hopefully this will have English Subs.

I pray that this has English Subs. Right now it says it does not have any specs on the language... but I can only hope that this will.
I do not want to have to wait for a US release.

Bumping a bit of an old topic. Just recieved my LE version today and flipped through a few scenes.

The PQ is pretty good, definitely better than the DVD version, but it could be better imo. Would rate it around 3.5/5. SQ is incredible though (TrueHD 5.1). Would rate the SQ at 5/5. Everything was very clear.

Also, there are no subs of any kind. Not English nor Japanese. Hopefully we will see a US release soon.

Thanks for letting us know. Annoying when they do that.

I wish the US would hurry up and start releasing...

That's Japan for you. Plus importing through Amazon.com isn't always the best way to save money

Thanks, I couldn't find detail information from the site but I can tell you that, generally, Imported Japanese anime is very expensive. I remember that the whole set of Imported Mazinga Z R2 DVD is more than $800 and this is DVD, not Blu-ray. So, it is not a surprise that your BD cost $90.

It's because it has "Blu" in the title, which makes it a premium title, and thus, more special/expensive.

Most Japan animation is pretty spendy when imported. Going back to VHS tapes to DVD. Their just following the trend.

The version on Amazon is the limited edition, which comes with a storyboard book and other goodies. A less expensive regular edition without the extras was released at the same time.

Some people avoided the Perfect Blue Blu-ray because of the reportedly poor picture quality (and the lack of English subtitles). One reviewer on amazon.co.jp states that it's only worth buying for the book and the box. If you haven't opened it yet, you may want to search for some reviews first, since most of the people who bought it were disappointed with the quality.

Actually, Amazon had this in stock recently (not through a third party seller). I was thinking about buying it, and they had 1 left in stock for at least a week. In the end, I decided it was too expensive, especially with the bad reviews for PQ.

Sky Blue isn't too bad at all... the backgrounds are very detailed and the characters are more of a 'cel' style like Appleseed. Sky Blue, also through Amazon.com is fairly priced. Good buy if you like animation.

The original title for this was Wonderful Days. It's a Korean movie. Personally, I liked what I saw of the animation, but I didn't find the story that interesting.

The anime movie I'm most looking forward to seeing is The Sky Crawlers, from Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell). The BD is due out early next year in Japan, but it's doubtful it will have English subtitles. Warner Bros. picked up international rights.

My bad I just checked today so I was unaware. Anime prices are typically high anyway for example Akira is 6,000yen in japan and that is the discounted price. So for perfect blue to be this expensive isn't too suprising. I suppose you could wait for a sale. I am never patient enough to wait, but to each his own.

I know prices are usually high for Japanese media (CDs, DVDs or BDs). I dropped $200 last month on the Bubblegum Crisis Blu-ray set, but I feel I got my money's worth because the quality is superb. In the case of Perfect Blue, all of the reviews I saw said the picture quality was lacking. Since I have the anamorphic region 3 DVD (with English subs), it didn't appear to be worth the cost to upgrade to the BD. I was interested in the picture continuity book, but not for $80. I'd pay 6,000 yen for Akira on BD, but only if it's a quality release.

Expect a lot of anime releases import and even some domestic releases to be quite expensive. "FREEDOM" is an awesome release but the price of the box set is very expensive and reading the Amazon Japan boards, people are just really upset at the pricing.

But in a way, I'm not too surprised because I remember way back then, having to pay up the yin yang for import anime and Japan music LD releases and there would only be 30-60 minutes worth of content.

But here in the US, I like how the industry is now making things much more affordable for the consumer. I just hope though that there is a good percentage of the fan base that will purchase their anime in blu-ray.

In the U.S., it seems like there are two groups of fans now: people who expect their anime to be dirt cheap and people who are willing to pay for top quality (i.e., Blu-ray). A lot of fans today store their anime collections on hard drives instead of DVD shelves (in other words, they download everything). That's part of the reason why the anime DVD industry is in such dire straits. What's the answer? Release more anime on Blu-ray for those who want the best quality and offer new titles online before everyone has already viewed them for free. Things are headed in that direction but there have already been some casualties.
