I fear for 4k Disks...

As we know, 4k media is just around the corner.
My greatest fear for it is that, like a lot of movies nowadays, they aren't being remastered to 2, 4, 6 or even 8k where available.
We are getting a lot of VHS, LaserDisk and DVD ports instead of proper Video Quality.
Also suffering is the Audio side of things. A lot of things are still being released with Lossy Sound. Heck, some movies are getting downgraded sound from previous releases.

In order for 4k to truly take off, DVD needs to be completely gone by the time 4k starts coming out.
Also, EVERY 4k Title must come with a BD and UV code in order to survive.
BD should not be a standalone option either, but 4k should also be relatively inexpensive, both Movie and Player wise.

I agree with you although I don't think DVD will be completely gone by the end of next year unfortunately. Most retailers still push DVD over Blu-ray, and some studios don't even publish equivalent Blu-rays for releases they put on DVD.

Not really a problem.

So many new releases are mastered in 2K only anyway. Catalog movies shot on film would benefit from 4K or higher resolution far more than new films being shot on digital video, but catalog movies don't sell enough units to justify a major switch to 4K discs.

4K is being pushed too fast for all the wrong reasons.

That's okay.

Having said that, again, catalog titles don't really sell enough units for the studios to make a major push.

I've been saying this for a few years. The only titles that are going to benefit from a 4K format are the ones that have had their digital intermediary completed at 4K or higher. Then there's the issue of visual effects as most are completed at 2K.

I also wanted to say that there's no need for 6K at all. It works like this:

2K = 1920 x 1080 (BD)
4k = 3840 x 2160 (4K BD) - This is four times the number of pixels as 2K. This is equivalent to 35mm, which is what most films are shot in.
8K = 7680 x 4320 - This is sixteen times the number of pixels as 2K. This is equivalent to 65/70mm films.

But so much is DVD only like tv shows. Can't see DVD going.

Also the problem for me with 4k is that I'm tired of the same old titles being re released, different slip, steelbook version, some other special wave, anniversary edition but same old disc etc etc.

I've got maybe 100 DVDs I love and would upgrade to blu ray, catalogue titles like Shocker, Single White Female, Stepfather 2, Critters, House, Phantasm., Nighthawkes, Day of the Jackel.....the list goes on.
Yet I see it more likely that Batman or Gremlins, although both released about five times on blu and even recently in some diamond edition, both will be released AGAIN now in 4k long before any HD issue of 100s of top 70s-00s titles

Just so boring, does blu Ray really need upgrading, we really need to triple dip.

Since a lot of people don't mind an upscaled Movie on BD, they can toss TV shows onto a BD and fit more onto a disk.

I know, but that hasn't stopped some studios from doing a random 6k scan.
I'd rather a 6k instead of a 2k though.

I predict that 4K Blu-rays will be to standard Blu-rays what SACDs are to standard CDs right now.

The 4K Blu-rays will have a viable market out there in the niche community of videophiles, just as SACDs have a viable market in the niche community of audiophiles. Most people will probably be perfectly happy with standard Blu-rays, just as most people are happy with standard CDs, but the superior product will be available for the small crowd that wants to put their resources into great home theater systems necessary to enjoy the improvement in resolution.

I'm not into looking through anyone's collection. But I see you've got around 1000 movies. How many would you upgrade to 4k? Then once you've done that, how many to 8k when that comes out etc etc.

I love Robo Cop. VHS-DVD-blu-blu 4k. I'd have to stop there Im not going 6k/8k. I also love Jaws and The Terminator. But I doubt I'd spend more to have them 4k. I'm happy with the blu Rays I can't keep spending £10-£15 every 2 yrs on the same film.

I think 4K will be what laserdisc used to be when VHS was the standard. Something videofiles will collect, but trust me the general public wont care about it at all! DVD is still pushed way too hard for there to be a new disc format.

I would probably only buy new releases in 4k. Don't feel like investing thousands of dollars to replace movies that may not benefit from the upgrade or lack of as some of the companies would do. You know some will push off old masters on a 4k disc.
