Default Wicked City (1987)

One of my favorite anime movies since junior high when i rented it and quite a mindblowing film for it's time, it's like Nightbreed meets Men in Black and The Thing with a hint of Lovecraft.

Yoshiaka Kawajari made himself a hit director with this one.

Australia A First.

One of the first anime movies I saw back in the early 90's along with Akira and Ninja Scroll. Another great movie that would greatly benefit in a HD release.

I was under the impression that Kawajiri's career took off with Ninja Scroll. Either way, he's not my cup of tea. Always thought his films lacked in the story department, Wicked City included. Not that it's without its noirish charms.

I like Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. I think it's probably Kawajiri's best. It has it's flaws. I was a little disappointed that we got toned down violence, though it was nice to have a Kawajiri film I could watch with my family.

Damn, saw this title in the main forum and thought it was for a release date!

This was one of the Anime titles I had to put in the back of the shelf so mum wouldn't see it lol Classic 80s anime... need more of these titles on Blu-Ray instead of this modern crap.

I'm not a fan of Wicked City, but I agree generally that we need more 80's (and early 90's) anime on Blu-ray. I wonder if selling the movies in bulk is a possible model for the future. Say by releasing a set of Kawajiri's OVA's (minus Ninja Scroll). A complete restoration, like that given to the Ghibli titles, is out-of-the-cards for a flick like Cyber City Oedo 808. So if it were sold with other titles, including whatever special features the company still has the rights to, would it be worth it to get the slight HD upgrade in picture quality? I genuinely wonder what others here think. I'm not a business expert, so it would be especially interesting to hear from insiders.

And do you think Urotsukidoji is better in terms of a similar sleazy horror fantasy or in terms of story?

Anyone ever read the Urotsukidoji manga? Always wondered if they were better than the films. I've only seen the first one on vhs.

I watched this for the first time about a week ago and I enjoyed it for the same reasons I enjoyed Urotsukidoji: it was dark, stylish and sexually perverse.

That's exactly what they did in japan, albeit on dvd back in 2008; a box containing wicked city, demon city and cyber city.
What little I can decipher says they were new prints and new remasters, google translate wasn't much help though. Ofcourse it's long out of print now.
I'm not sure if posting links is acceptable, but if you type in the following on amazon.jp you can find it: 川尻善昭 SPECIAL DVD-BOX

Agreed. Still waiting for a blu-ray release. I love Madhouse anime. Hoping for a Kite/Mezzo Forte uncut release as well.

Who thinks David Cronenberg or Stuart Gordon and Brian Yuzna should do a new live-action movie?

Not a blu-ray unfortunately, but Discotek will be releasing a new DVD edition next year. Probably an improvement over the 2000 DVD.
