Default Die Hard With a Vengeance alternate ending

If you haven't seen this, it's worth a look. I'm having trouble figuring out one of the riddles McClane uses against Simon. It's the second to last one:

"McClane says three years ago I busted two robbery suspects, the youngest was the father, the other one('s?), son. How does that work?"

Simon's reply is that they are husband and wife. I can't figure out how this is correct!!

The youngest was the father of the other one's son?

If so, then it is easy:

The other's son had the youngest (of the busted two) as a father.

So younger husband, older wife.

That makes sense, and he could have said that. There's no subtitles though on the alternate ending. I'm going to tell myself that's what he said and leave it at that. I'm OCD about these things . . . I watched the water jug puzzle MANY times when this first came out on video years ago to figure it out.

There are actually two solutions:

Two jugs, one 3 gallon, one 5 gallon . . . GOAL: 4 gallons

*Fill up the 3 gallon, pour into 5 gallon, leaving 2 gallons of empty space in the 5 gallon
*Fill up 3 gallon again, pour to fill the 5 gallon leaving 1 gallon in the 3 gallon jug
*Empty 5 gallon
*Pour 1 gallon remaining in the 3 gallon into the 5 gallon
*Fill 3 gallon and pour into 5 gallon
*You now have 4 gallons in the 5 gallon jug

OR:

*Fill the 5 gallon jug
*Fill the 3 gallon jug with the 5 gallon jug, leaving 2 gallons in the 5 gallon jug.
*Empty the 3 gallon jug and pour the 2 gallons from the 5 gallon into the 3 gallon jug, leaving 1 gallon of empty space in the 3 gallon jug
*Fill the five gallon jug and fill the remainder of the 3 gallon jug from the 5 gallon jug
*You again have 4 gallons in the 5 gallon jug

The hardest thing is that the key is the empty space, not the amount of water. The concept of nothingness for some reason is harder to work with, the human brain is weird
