Smile Contributions & Duplicate Entries - Let's fix the database!

I once complained about Contributions: How to submit properly, and how they are approved/denied. I was welcomed by iceman, and assured a policy was coming. I also started the Duplicate entries (Official) thread. I was happy that iceman took it over, since he should be responsible for that sort of thing, and...iceman is awesome.

Ironically, while I have gotten dinged for rudimentary submissions (I have made a few mistakes), we members still see Duplicate entries everyday that have been approved within the last few months.

There must be a better level of approval processes than this. "We" deal with these multiple (i.e. more than just duplicate) entries of the same BD releases every day, yet many members aren't aware that what they are adding to their collections is False.

As you can tell, it's frustrating. When you want the database to be accurate, and no one responds for weeks...it's actually quite .

My hope is we can work together on fixing these issues, which include ensuring erroneous entries are removed and no longer allowed, and publishing those "contribution guidelines" that have been promised for a while. I'm all for having new features like that super-cool My Blu-ray.com link in the banner, but shouldn't we focus on the established functions/processes of the site, and get the database correct?

Thank you for your valuable time.

EDIT: I've heard some good ideas, but no solutions. Perhaps Deciazulado could provide some accurate information to the community regarding submissions...real vs. duplicate vs. imaginary. Got stats?

Of course I considered that too. Since I complain about it so much, though, I'd never ask that.

I think we've all been there before. We're collectors, in some shape or form, after all. Of course there is nothing wrong with constructive criticism (complaining) especially if the intent is to make improvements for the benefit of the community.

Sorry, I meant that I've asked to be a "Contributor" in the past. Granted, it was out of frustration, much like this OP.

Data management is part of what I do. So yes, I've been there before.

Default Example

THREE editions of The Grand Budapest Hotel exist, when only one has been released and/or announced:

https://www.blu-ray.com/search/?quic...n=bluraymovies

At this moment, 24 people have erroneous versions of a BD listed in their collections. Those who manage this site's data should be ashamed!

I decided to help out and do some work to make the site better. I created some marathon links for the theatre releases of marathon. something happend and I post a bunch of them. they were avengers marathon, indiana jones, and a few others. I was very annoyed to see either they got lost or missing in action.. then I lost a bunch of credits for it.
I gave up on helping with other marathons, since it was a waste of time.
this site has a very serious issue with this problem.

@Iceman I've been told to get in contact with you about an issue I've been having the past few months with the database, but I see you have PM's disabled so am unable to do so.
Is there a way to contact you otherwise?

I still wish for a cover explanation. I uploaded new covers for Seven Psychopaths that were rejected. Sometimes I think larger wins out over clearer.

I also honestly wish the site would just implement a flat art only policy.

I don't understand cover art on this site, it's hit or miss. I uploaded the exact same image from a duplicate listing (w/ art) to the original listing (w/ no art) and it was rejected. It was already approved in another location on the site?! Oh well, I guess the proper listing just won't have a cover even though the duplicate does.

If anyone has an issue about why something was rejected, please feel free to message me and we can discuss it.

I may have simply overlooked something or thought the current artwork looked better that what was suggested. Also, keep in mind that there were approximately 600 pending image approvals so it's quite easy to miss something with such large volume.

Exclamation Request: Database Entries

Hello all,

When updating existing database entries or submitting new ones, please consider including a message or link in the Comment/Source section.

It makes our job much easier because we can determine that the release does in fact exist and that the specs you list (BD size, aspect ratio, subtitles, audio tracks, etc.) are accurate.

Thank you,
Scott

This is a perfect example of why I created this thread. A certain reviewer would deny any and every submission I'd make that did not include something in the Comment field, even if it were plainly, obviously correct.

So, is this a rule, suggestion, request...?

Thanks!

I'd say it's mostly a courtesy suggestion. It mostly applies to international members who submit or update, for example, Danish or Polish Blu-ray releases. Nine out of 10 times, I can't find back cover art to confirm audio tracks or subtitles so I just leave it unapproved until I can get confirmation from the member directly or from another source.

Just use good discretion. If it's something that could be hard to find, please include a link.

You folks want me to pay attention to Echo Bridge titles because I just noticed that some bundles have different version of films.

For example, Echo Bridge released Equilibrium in May 2011 with English 2.0 Stereo and a 1.78 aspect ratio. However, in this 2012 collection, it has English DTS 5.1 and a 2.35:1 aspect ratio.

This is sadly true for other films.

I think it's important to keep the listings separate/updated for these types of releases. As with your example, having all the versions of The Lookout listed helped me choose the best/correct release for me. I chose this one because it's a single 50 GB disc with the correct aspect ratio:

That's what I did.

I added a new version of the film, citing in the comments that it is the version included with several bundles. I then updated various Bundle IDs.
