Dreamworks once again to beat Disney in 3D home entertainment market. Can't wait to see this film as I missed this last year. I think Dreamworks won't disappoint us for the 3D effect. As a 3D movie enthusiast, this is day one purchase for sure.

I was very disappointed when I saw this movie in theaters (2D), but there were some shots where I thought "this would be great in 3D". Hopefully it delivers

Thumbs up These penguins kick azz!

I love these insane bird brains! I saw the 3D trailer for Penguins of Madagascar on the How To Train Your Dragon 2 3D BD and it revealed itself to have strong 3D (and some fun pop outs). I'll get this on release day for sure no matter how silly it is.

Did you like Madagascar 3 better?

I was going to see this, but didn't since the trailers didn't reveal enough of the adventure. I wasn't sure what the story was. They just mostly showed jokes.
The 3D in the trailer though, high medium to strong 3D.

I wonder if it can match Dreamworks' strongest 3D film; Madagascar's 3D?

Yes, I did like Madagascar 3 better. It wasn't a great movie (imo), but the story was decent, I actually cared about some of the characters, and it kept my interest. None of those things were present for me when I watched Penguins.

And I agree about the trailers. I had no idea what the movie was about before I saw it.

I really like the Madagascar movies, but the Penguins themselves - thoroughly annoying, I'll give this movie a chance but these characters are no where as funny as Despicable Me's minions - whose stand alone movie this year I hope is really fun.

Thanks Jwerk. That gives me a better perspective on the movie.

The reason I enjoyed Madagascar 3 also, was because of the main villain lady. A great villain can really help a movie.

With the trailers, they're probably going for the quick laugh for the kids watching it. I remember for Guardians 3D (also Dreamworks), they showed those little elf workers in the red and green hats, bouncing into each other and that was pretty much the whole trailer advertising the movie. Until I did further research, there wasn't any way I was going to see it. Turns out the little elves were in the film about 1% of the time.

Anybody picking this up week 1? Or is this one to get later? I am usually a sucker for Dreamworks...

This 3d blu-ray exceeded my expectations. The 3d is upper medium to strong with impressive layering and depth combined with occasional instances of foreground scenes extending toward the viewer. The artwork is beautiful as you would expect from DreamWorks and the story is very action-packed and engaging although somewhat derivative of Despicable Me 2.

I agree completely! Watched it tonight, and it was a pleasant surprise. I thought Madagascar 3 was just OK (significantly helped by the strong 3D), and these characters kind of annoyed me in that one... So I was shocked that I ended up enjoying this movie more. Benedict Cumberbatch & John Malkovich sounded like they were having a blast in their supporting roles (I'm surprised the main villain wasn't featured more prominently in the trailer), the snarky/silly humor mostly worked for me, and as you mentioned, the animation and 3D work were excellent. (Your DM2 plot comparison is spot-on, too - that was my biggest criticism of the film, but I actually think I had more fun w/ Penguins.)

Thanks for the reviews.

I see best buy is offering a deluxe 3D kit for 22.99 for a short time.
It includes a box with two penguin popper items. Too bad it's only available in select stores... No online ordering.

3D is good, but nowhere near as wonderful as Madagascar 3, I preferred M3 as a film as well but this was still enjoyable enough and not quite as loud and obnoxious as M3.

Slipcover enthusiasts be aware that the penguin toys are attached to the slipcover with a clear, heavy tape. I cut the tape but when I tried to peel it it started to rip the slipcover, so I just pressed it back down.

This

It completely mutilated my slipcover. Pulled the color right off.

That stinks. I noticed most of Dreamwork's if not all of them, just have cardboard slip covers versus holographic ones. Saves them money and they usually offer them at a lower price.

Keb, Doc Moonlight:
How do you like the 3D in this one compared to Madagascar 3's 3D if you've seen that one?

Thank you for the warning. I'll be careful with that.
