Metro Goldwyn Mayer GOG 3D Blu-ray (1954) [Region Locked]

GOG was released on 3D Blu-ray in the USA and Germany. The US edition is locked to Region A while the German edition is locked to Region B. Each version has some unique special features.

Gog 3D Blu-ray Region A locked

Gog 3D Blu-ray Region B locked

Original post:
MisterLime, Kino insider from the "other forum" officially announced it. The 3D Film Archive is in charge of the restoration. And unlike other "restorations" this is a real restoration since the 3D Film Archive has the only surviving elements of the left eye. MGM only had the right eye in their library.

Looks like we'll finally get a vintage 3D title from United Artists/MGM for a change. The only studio that hasn't gotten onboard the vintage 3D bandwagon is Paramount.

Thanks, revgen!

GOG is especially gratifying because we found the only existing left side elements in the late 1990's. Greg Kintz and I are honored to be entrusted with the 3-D restoration.

It began filming in Natural Vision on September 8, 1953 and is composed for widescreen.

Excellent!

That's an awesome poster. If at all possible, I'd always encourage cover art that makes use of original poster art or appropriately reframes elements from it. ...not to be making demands or anything!

Never seen Gog, but I love clunky 50s sci-fi, and vintage 3-D, and robots. There's really no question about whether or not to pick this up. It shall be added to the list.

It will be out in October or November.

I'm not sure of the region status. That's between Kino-Lorber and MGM. We really don't have any say in the matter.

It would be a crime to region lock this - there's no excuse for region locking ANY vintage 3D release

I agree but it depends on the terms of the license with the copyright holder.

Kino were kind enough to release The Bubble region free so I have my fingers crossed for this one, as I do for all vintage 3D releases - all the hard work that goes into these fantastic restorations deserves as wide an audience as possible...

I agree but we licensed THE BUBBLE to Kino and specified region free in the contract. I don't know what MGM has done with their licensed titles.

Sadly the ones MGM have licensed out to Arrow and Shout Factory have generally all been region locked, but their Twilight Time releases have been region free so not all hope is lost - I just hope Kino can negotiate a region free deal here and maximise the reward all round for releasing what's bound to be a must-buy for all 3D enthusiasts.

In addition to GOG, I'd also like to see 3D Blu-rays of THE CHARGE AT FEATHER RIVER, THE MAD MAGICIAN, HONDO, BWANA DEVIL, REVENGE OF THE CREATURE, and TAZA, SON OF COCHISE, among other Golden Age films. I'm not particularly in a hurry to see IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE on Blu-ray 3D (though it certainly would be nice), because it's already been made available on VHS in 3D, 3.5 decades ago.

Why would it matter that It came from Outer Space was released on VHS 3 decades ago? How does that help anybody now? It's still unwatchable in 3D in a modern format.

I'm one of those who believe that when it comes to 3D movies, something's always better than nothing.

Which is why I hope It Came from Outer Space gets a 3D blu-ray release. Right now, we have nothing as far as that film is concerned. A bootleg VHS field-sequential release by 3DTV corp or a VHD field-sequential disc released in Japan decades ago doesn't exactly count as "something", since nobody can actually watch it in any useful fashion, without breaking out a CRT tv set and old field-sequential equipment, or watching it converted in anaglyph in a small window on your PC.

so have two 3d movies I bought. distributed by Rhino. Those copies are awful and WAY out of alignment.

All you see is a blurry mess, even with the 3d glasses that came with it on.
