USA The Pope of Greenwich Village / Desperate Hours ('90) (Double Feature) - June 2, 2015

Courtesy of Shout! Factory

Quote:
Academy Award® Nominee Mickey Rourke* Stars In Two Modern Classics!

The Pope Of Greenwich Village
Mickey Rourke (Sin City), Eric Roberts (Runaway Train) and Daryl Hannah (Blade Runner) "create emotion-charged characters who tingle with energy and play with conviction" (The Hollywood Reporter) in this modern-day classic.

In New York's Little Italy, smooth-talking hustler Charlie (Rourke) works in a restaurant and dreams of one day buying his own with his girlfriend Diane (Hannah). His wiry wheeler-dealer cousin Paulie (Roberts) waits tables, skims money off checks and is always scheming to score big. But they're all about to pull a scam on the wrong guy: Eddie (Burt Young, Rocky), the Mafia King of Greenwich Village! Now these small-time con men are in big-time trouble – trouble so big that even their mobster uncle might not be able to save them!

Desperate Hours
From Academy Award®-winning director Michael Cimino (The Deer Hunter) comes this taut psychological thriller about a family held hostage in their own home.

In dire need of a hideout, escaped convict Michael Bosworth (Mickey Rouke) uses his charming smile to gain entry into the posh home of Nora and Tim Cornell (Mimi Rogers and Oscar® winner Anthony Hopkins**) and their two children. While waiting for his beautiful lawyer- turned- accomplice (Kelly Lynch) to arrive, Bosworth's smile soon explodes into homicidal rage when the Cornells desperately try to fight back. Holding the family at gunpoint and ruthlessly pitting husband against wife, Bosworth's fury escalates into a shocking night of terror and cold-blooded murder. Finally, the family is forced to take a stand that will either destroy them... or unite them as never before.

Saw Pope many many years ago when it was on HBO. If the price is right I'll bite.

Really glad Pope is finally coming to Blu-ray. Wish this wasn't a double feature, though, as I'm not a fan of Desperate Hours.

Boooo on double fetures, these are magnificent films that deserve their stand alone release!!! Michael Cimino is not dead go get an interview with him, And Micky is half alive, go get the interviews and give these two gems the proper release they deserve, or give them to Kino!

Wit...if is two discs I could live with that!

The Pope of Greenwich Village definitely merits a standalone release. There are any number of lesser Mickey Rourke films that would've been better suited to pair with Desperate Hours, e.g. Fall Time, White Sands, Johnny Handsome, etc. Either way, I'm just happy The Pope of Greenwich Village is finally being released. It seems a number of my favorite films are getting released in '15: Miami Blues, State of Grace, At Close Range, etc.

Every time I watch "The Pope" I end up whistling or singing Summer Wind by Sinatra for a couple of weeks afterwards!

Great film and the some of the cinematography will look great in the correct aspect ratio unlike the old MGM dvd which is in some crappy letter-boxed format which looks completely wrong.

Man, "Desperate Hours" is so unintentionally hilarious. I watched it for the first time in years recently and Mickey Rourke, Anthony Hopkins, and Lindsay Crouse seem like they were in a competition to see who could go the most over the top. The first 45 minutes of the film are solid, but then it descends into complete absurdity. That final stand-off between Rourke and Hopkins almost had me pissing myself laughing, I swear. It's like Cimino was telling them, "That last take was good, but I want it more cartoonish this time." And Crouse's performance must be seen to be believed. It boggles my mind that she thought she should come at the character from that angle and that Cimino approved of it. If she'd done a variation on her ice-queen performance in "House of Games", it would have worked quite nicely. Instead, she does this insane Southern accent even though the film is set in Utah.

I half expected Al Pacino as Tony Montana to burst in and scream, "Say hello to my little friend!!!" The performances are that cartoonish and over the top.

I haven't seen it mentioned, but this seems to have quietly gone down the road of other MGM Shout releases and is now OOP.

It really needs a fresh remaster and a solo release, but until that happens this is all we had.

Just a heads-up the new, no-frills Sandpiper disc is the same MGM master that's been out there for years. HOWEVER it's encoded far better than Shout's release, has a high bit-rate, and the gamma seems improved also. If you're a fan and want to see it again, it's definitely superior to the old Shout release, which was done years back, when they weren't doing a very good job at encoding a master like this.

This was one of my dad's favorite movies and I finally got to check it out for the first time tonight and I really liked it. Rourke plays it cool here but its Eric Roberts who steals the show. His accent is spot on and despite his screwups you cant help but feel for the guy. Seeing this is a novel, might have to track a copy down and read it.

Great film. Rourke has said it's still his favourite of anything he was part of.
