Hong Kong Zhong Kui: Snow Girl And The Dark Crystal (2015) Blu-ray 3D [Region Free]

Not sure if this is getting a 3d blu-ray release soon, but I just saw it in theatres. The 3d is apparently native and I didn't notice any conversion errors and it certainly look like a native production.

It however was mostly of the mild variety with only a handful of select shoots where 3d seems to have been truly considered, leaving the majority of the film left with that odd shoot in 3d as if it was a 2d film feel.

The film itself I will write a full review on, but to put simply it was awful with some of the worst production values I have seen in a long time and utterly uninspired art design. It looked liked it was a film that needed a $150+ million budget made for significantly less (which it was, that doesn't make the effects any less horrid). The script and acting where also a special kind of bad and the staging of the action.... I will have to think of a way to describe how poor it was.

Thanks for the info on the 3D. Sorry to hear it had mild 3D in many shots.
The special effects, while not amazing, did look kind of cool, with the monster, and maybe some of the fighting.

Even bad movies in many people's eyes can still be entertaining, and sometimes that is what the movie set out to do.

In spoiler tags if needed, what would be some things they could do to improve the film aside from a larger budget, just to get a better sense of what may have gone wrong with the script, acting, ect?

Thanks Suntory.

I'm dying to see this movie (in 3D) even if it's mild. This is one of my favorite genres.

I have not seen the trailer so maybe they looked less horrid their. But suffice to say, they are very sub par. Some of the animation was below ps2 levels for example and numerous creatures looked of similar quality to many ps3 games (without good art design though), albeit with far more particle effects.

What could they do it improve it story wise, well I really think you would have to scrap everything beyond maybe the concept and start over. It really is structurally a mess (a scene plays, then another scene players after trying to tell you why you should have cared what was happening in the scene before this scene, leaving you caring about neither). Dialogue was cringe worthy as well, story wise is made the Transformer films look like masterpieces. The action needed a severe overhaul as well. It probably would have been better had they not tried to be so epic and worked with the budget they had, instead of stretching it way to far.

It really is in that territory where I can see maybe some liking watching it for how bad it is, but it is a bit longer then most want for something like that. It actually reminded me quite a bit of the third mummy film, but without as much humor (as unfunny as it was).

Thanks Suntory for the feedback. It appears to be mostly a romance, conflict story with supernatural monsters and magic from what I can tell. I see what you're saying about the special effects if compared to a AAA movie. The animations could be more life like (more effects from weight would benefit, smoother motions) as constructive criticism, if that was their intent to make some of the human like monsters more believable. I'd have to see the whole film to be sure.

I did like 47 Ronin, though this doesn't look as martial arts action focused.

From what I sampled, it looks pretty good in 3d- albeit somwhat cheap-looking cgi. I would not even consider it if not in 3d.

Snow Girl is super weak, flat native 3D. Only the CGI has decent depth or any pop-out. I'd skip the 2D version and the out of print Hong Kong Blu-ray 3D.

So just avoid the film, period?

It wasn't to my taste. I'd recommend anything 3D directed or produced by Tsui Hark instead, and also Mojin: The Lost Legend by Wuershan or even one of the Monkey King movies by Cheang Pou-soi. If you're looking for 2D Asian cinema, you can do a lot better.
